Latest in my MV6 madness!
« on: 17 April 2009, 12:25:41 »

After a bit too much of this...

With not quite enough oil  :-[ the super knocks came to visit, so engine became...

I then bought a replacement and am swapping the bits over...

Bought this to keep me going...

Passed its mot on the Friday, Headgasket blew on the Saturday! So the head is nearly off...

Plan with the V6, new Cambelt set and thrmostat, will need to put the oil cool from the old one to the new one (magic gunk?!) and fitting an external oil cooler with a sandwich plate (so swapping the oil filter type) Also desperatly need to get the bottom end to breathe better as the fact its throwing oil out of the heads is why it ran lower than I thought in the first place!

Also been told Driftworks are getting Coilovers in for these too... Damn temptations!  :y

So she's a bit sad at the mo...

Nice one  :y
So did the con rod go or has the engine gone solid and blow up?
Back on the road this weekend?

Absolutley fine tbh, thw day I got her took her to a practise day and she was ok, she's got a welded diff mind :D

They can show their weight a bit, but are very composed with it, much better (imo) with comparable bmw's I have drifted, shes just been lowered which helps a bit with the body roll, the DW coilovers are tempting!

Just fairly bad knocking, stopped her as soon as I heard and towed to my friends workshop, so may well open the old lump up and see how bad it is. Dunno about this weekend, budget is a bit tight! Building a chevy V8 for my comp car (200sx) and this had kinda got in the way along with that estate i need to get the HG done on!

All fun and games  :D ::)

Have you measured oil temperature to determine if a second oil cooler is actually required? I'd be surprised if oil temperature was your problem, TBH. :-/

Adding an external cooler in addition to the oil to water heat exchanger is going to create a pretty long, restrictive path for the oil through the system meaning you'll have lower oil pressure / flow rate available to the engine.

If an external cooler were required I'd fit one large enough to cope with the job, connect it to the unions where the internal cooler normally connects and avoid the internal oil cooler and sandwich plate, which is another source of restriction to the flow.

Bear in mind that you'll probably get over-cooling of the oil during normal use (assuming the car sees normal road use). The beauty of oil heat exchangers is that they don't over-cool. Having said that, if you're drifting, forward speed is so low that an oil-to-water cooler is probably a better bet than oil-to-air. Something like a Laminova if the standard cooler is proven to be inadequate.

When you say it's throwing oil out of the heads what do you mean? Leaking oil, or is your feeling that oil is not draining down to the sump adequately from under the cam covers?

From what little I've seen of the internals of this engine, the oil supply to the heads is restricted to the bare minimum and there are only a few small drain-back holes, which makes it unlikely that large amounts of oil are being thrown up under the cam covers IMHO.

I think oil surge might be your main problem, assuming the level was up to the maximum when it failed, so it might be worth looking into improving the baffling of the sump (I've never seen inside one so no idea how good the current setup is).

Oil pressure and temperature gauges are also essential to see what's going on IMHO.

I will/would be using a therostatic oil sanwich plate.

The issue is not the lack of oil, but the oil getting up into the heads and getting blown through the exhausts. This is on max on the dipstick. Its happy on min, but I must have let it go a little far.

The oil cooler is an extra precuation and the vacum pipes all suck anyway  ;D Far too small and going back into the inlet, they need beefing up into catch tanks imo and help the bottom end breath better, prevent it all being theon up in the first place  :y

Cant see that vid at work, will have a look at home  :)

Perhaps a simpler way to do this would be to get a low temp thermostat, such as 160 or 180, OEM is 192, and then a larger radiator, or a third fan to suck air from the back side, and then rewire the fans to kick in with a switch, then as soon as you get on the track turn them all on, and then proceed with your drifting...

The low temp thermostat will keep water circulating before it gets way too hot, and then that will keep the oil at a lower temp as well as the rest of the engine...

I ran my car with a broken thermostat (constantly open) on an autocross course and the temp stayed low the whole time, and the motor was running in 1st gear between 4-6K RPM...

Whatever you decide I wish you luck, and I cant wait to see some pics or videos..

Bit of streeto manji in the clip, nearly hit the lampost! lol I will have to get some cids up of a couple of laps in mine when she's done.

As I say, its not really the temp, its just the oil getting up thats the issue, the oil cooler is just a good thing to add while its all out imo :)

TBH, I can't see how oil getting burnt via the breathers could lead to a wrecked engine unless so much was getting burnt that it dropped the level in the sump to below a safe level.

Yes, you could take the breathers out to a catch tank to avoid burning the oil, but, I think you risk spending time and money without arriving at a solution, TBH.

The problem lies, IMHO, with the supply of oil to the bearings so it's either the oil getting too hot (unlikely with the built-in oil cooler, but I'd be fitting an oil temp and pressure gauge to monitor it before fitting another oil cooler), the oil pump sucking air due to too low a level in the sump, oil surge, or perhaps aeration of the oil by the crank.
