Omega project 13 arrived
« on: 01 September 2006, 10:17:41 »

Project 13 finally arrived this morning. It is a 2000 W-reg 2.5 v6 CD Auto facelift. 227k on the clock. It arrived by transporter as a non-runner.

Took it off the transporter and took me all of 8 minutes to get it running. Helps to have some petrol in and some charge in a battery!

Anyway, first impressions? Needs a new engine. I did say first impressions! Also bodywork is scruffy. It has marks on both front doors where a mini-cab sign must have been stuck on. Also mini-cab ariel in boot is a bit of a giveaway! Headlamp washers missing - now there is a surprise. Front bumper cracked, back bumper marked, keyed across front of bonnet and on one wing, but not bad actually will touch in a T-cut out.

Inside is not bad at all but I don't think this low-life knew what a hoover is!

Scuttle is loose and wipers are in the boot, also a very burned plug lead is also in the boot. Wriring loom to plenum bolts missing, plenum caps missing, EGR clamp bolt missing. Conclusion? Someone has had a go at sorting this and not very well.

Engine starts but immediately there is a light knocking/load tapping from the top end. Could be anything, but my guess is a cam.

Exhaust is also blowing near the back somewhere.

So. My plans are A, B or C.

A. Fit a replacement engine, clean it all up, fix exhaust and put a couple of tyres on then sell it for about £1800.

B. Strip back top and see what is actually wrong. Could be anything from a broken spark plug to con rods.

C. Sell it now and let someone witha bit less back ache have a go at this one.

Anyone want it, make me a sensible offer. I have painted a dreadful picture here, but if I do it up it will look very good indeed. I cannot tell what the gearbox is like except it goes forwards and backwards as normal so far. I only drove it about 30 ft onto my driveway is it has no tax or MoT.

There you go. Who fancies a real project?

Cracking Project - similar top the one i considored.....

New engine would be the way to go - even repairing it on that mileage, especially if its been half arsed already !

If only it wasnt so far away  ;)

UPDATE

Suspected broken no 4 cam. Car is throwing oil out from that cam cover like it is going out of fashion. I am taling 1 lt per minute!!!!! Also, the passenger side manifold is blowing a good'un.

I have various options. Most likely is to turn this into a medium term project, maybe a month or so. Replacing the engine and gearbox on the way. Gearbox seems fine, but for what it will take, I may as well just sling another lower mileage one in.

Bodywork is 'fair'. Very deep scratch across front of bonnet, right through to the metal. Same on OSF wing. Also, many minor scratches, dings and marks on most of the car. Inside the leather seats are in remarkably good condition, considering the life this car has had. Found £18 under the back seat. My record so far!

On the plus side, this is a 2000 Facelift Omega that will look pretty nice once I have finished. Has alloys, aircon that works (pity) and lots of new parts on the engine.

Having had a much closer look this afternoon, some muppet has tried to fix a leaking rocker gasket by slapping tons of sealnat on the outside of it. yep, that'll work!!!!! Noise we think might be a cam follower.

Leaking manifold on PASSENGER side! Duh, it would be!

So, possibly top off, passenger head off, then either change the head or build it back up from there.

The alternative, I prefer, is just to swap out the engine and box, then salvage a good engine and box for rebuilding.

the possibilities are many. But this will have to be a longer term project than normal.

Its a 2.2, soooo easy. You can see it easily and nothing is in its way... should be very easy i would have thought?
