I know this thread is a few days old but I thought this was worth posting. Filled up with Shell Optimax a week ago and then again with Shell V-Power on Friday. Not to surprising there, cost me an arm and a leg at 106.9p per litre.

Just drove back from my Mum's in Bristol to Cornwall. Kept the cruise control on all the way at 70mph except for the short section that is not dual carriageway when I dropped to 60mph. Including the 3 miles onto the M5 at Bristol and the 4 miles from the A30 to home I averaged 38.9 mpg and used only 4.2 gallons over the 164 miles door to door. This means total cost of £20.40 for the run.

Compare this to the run when I use Tesco petrol when I usually get 32 mpg on the same run. At 91.9p per litre that would cost £21.40. I know this is not a huge saving but I feel that the benefit of using a premium fuel must add something to the equation.

I would be interested to see if anyone has the same experience.

What? 99.9 at my local garage!!!

I know, if I could get it for that I wouldn't use anything else from now on. However, I was never convinced about the premium/budget fuel debate; I am now. I will try to find a local place selling for a better price and will go there in future. Wakefield is a little far to fill up though.

This site could be handy to save a few pennies on fuel.  Free to register, gives cheapest fuel within whatever radius of your postcode you input.  Saves me a few quid on Optimax.

I am signed up to this site but didn't realise that you could search for 'Super' Unleaded until you pointed me back there. They just used to tell me Tesco or Asda. Looks like I can get V-Power, the new Optimax, for 99.8p per litre 11 miles from home.

Cheapest for me is 97.9 only 5 miles from home.

Saves almost £3 per tankfill.....

I used to use Shell Optimax, then for a period of time BT Ultimate, and now I am using the less-advertised Texaco High-Octane. I haven't used 95 RON in two years now.

The main reason for me is that the fuel is supposed to be cleaner and the added detergents. However, I still add Redex with each tankful for good measure.

I don't know if there is any significant improvement in MPG as I don't actually check this very often. On the performance side, I seem to think that the engine feels as if it has a bit 'more bite' with the Texaco compared to BT and Shell, but nothing I can measure. At any rate as I said out and out performance is not my main concern, the longativity of the engine is (I had the car for 6 years and may keep it for a few more...).

And if you were wondering why I swapped between petrol companies, well it is simply down to logistics, and at the moment Texaco petrol stations are easier to find on my usual routes.

I found a huge difference while towing, but I now get 16mpg when towing but that is on LPG - which works out the equivalent of around 36 or 38 on high octane petrol on costs, it is worth the 2mpg drop

It will be interesting to see what we get when we tow the van to Newent on Friday.
