They also leak internally into the plugs (nearside is difficult to check without removing plenum etc).  Maybe worth pulling no.1 plug HT lead just to check in there.

The 2.6 is slightly different in that it has individual coil pack so not HT leads as such. I last checked the plug wells just over a year ago when changing the spark plugs, this was indeed a long time ago but either way I lost more that 4L of oil over the past year and I can't imagine it all went into the plug wells with no external leak or smoke...

I know this sounds stupid, but try inserting the dipstick the other way round.  I get significantly different readings depending on which side of the flat is facing the engine.

Yes, I remembered your thread, I twisted the dip stick 360 degrees before removing it, just in case...  :(

Ah of course - missed that!   :-[    Do the coil packs unclip like the ht leads - I've never seen one in the flesh?

Still its a shed load of oil to be losing without seeing any sign of it.   Presumably its still running fine, no clouds of smoke etc.. would an MOT emission test pick up on burnt oil fumes?

Worth pulling a plug to see if its oily?   I agree that with that amount of oil you'd think it would be visible (or smelly) by now.

Engine runs prefect, no smoke, MOT passed two months ago.

As for the individual coil packs...:
