Hi

I have just bought a 99 'S' plate 2.5 CD. It has a large amount of history which has included rocker cover gaskets, Idle control, crank sensor, dis pack, leads and cats.

I love the car but it has a minor problem - it cuts out.

Some mornings it is hard to start and others it fires first time. Some days it will run perfectly, others it will cut out.

The cutting out gives no warning, the engine just stops. No warning lights before the event and it will start immediately after.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Does it cut out only on idle or when cruising also.

It runs perfectly until I stop and let it idle. There is no hesitation when accelerating and the car appears to have plenty of 'oomph'

Idle Control Valve is still favourite, but air intake leaks and EGR problem are also possibilities...

It could be idle control valve sticking but the other possibility is the crankshaft sensor.
The sensor output voltage increases with speed, if the sensor or cable is failing then there may be sufficient signal at normal rpms but not at idle or when cranking, hence poor starting and cutting out.

When you say hard to start, does it turn over healthily but just not fire at all ?

If so I'd suspect the cranksensor.

It turns over perfectly. It will take a couple of times before starting and other times it will start first time.

I had a similar sort of problem with my 2.2 which turned out to be the cam sensor.

Sounds very much like crank sensor to me

I'd say crank sensor.

£50 for a sensor. A bit of fiddling about to fit it and the problem will disappear.
