Hello all,

I'm new here, and new to Omega's.

I will be picking up my car (a 2001/Y  CD 2.6 V6) next Friday. This is a link to where it was being sold on ebay.

Just wondered if anyone could give me some general pointers and advice as a new Omega owner. Is there anything i should look out for? Any cheap and simple mods that would be of benefit?

I read on here that it should be fairly easy to add Cruise Control?

What are Vauxhall main dealers like when it comes to servicing?

Welcome to the site,

Firsly the most imporant thing is the Cambelt and Tensiors, unless you have DOCUMENTED proof this has been changed at 80k ish change it ASAP.

Vauxhall recommend it should be changed every 40k miles, if you are handy with spanner and sockets then have a go yourself. People here can lend you the timming kit.

Dealers are expensive for servicing, although if you can get access to a trade club card that will make things cheaper.


You mentioned cruise control, yes its dead easy on yours. As its a 2.6 its throttle is fly-by-wire, you need to get a new stalk which has the buttons on it, and it may work staight away.

If not it needs to be enabled with Tech2, dealers will charge £45+vat, or depending were you are certain members here have Tech2.  ;)

to give you an idea of dealer costs.... i am replacing the exhaust on my 2.2 from the cat back.

If i let a dealer do a quote and fit it, cost around about £500!!!  :o :o

I am getting the parts for myself (Geniune GM) for £200 and paying a local guy £20 to fit it.

I highly recommend using GM parts as they are generally well priced (even better with Trade Club) and get a local trusted guy to fit them.

For example, Right Hand centre section on my exhaust is:

£120 Retail

£71.38 Trade Club  ;)

Sorry for sounding daft, but who or what is Tech2?

I live in Windsor in Berkshire if that helps identify if there is somebody nearby.

Cambelt and tensioners as mentioned earlier. If no written proof (ie dealer invoice) then change the kit (not just belt). Possibly worth changing water pump at same time for extra £20 or so.  The consequences of not doing will almost make car a write off.

It is an easy taks to do these jobs (honestly) - a member here, Robin Hood, has a cambelt change DVD for £3, worth every penny.  Seriously consider doing this yourself, and on a 2.6 its even easier than the DVD suggests as no secondary air injection stuff to unbolt :)

I personally think its unlikely that for Drive-by-wire ECU is cruise enabled, and to do that, you need the real Tech2 (The handheld computer that dealers use to diagnose the onboard systems) - the 'cheapo Tech2' and other devices cannot do this.  AFAIK, I am the only person on this forum who owns one.  Once ECU enabled, its just a case of getting the stalk (2 types - make sure you get the 4 wire one) and plugging in :)

Tech2 is the name for the Vauxhall diagnostic computer.  Yours is OBD2 so generic OBD2 scanners will do low-level functions, but you need the real deal to enable cruise.

Well i haven't actually driven it yet!! I live in Windsor, and i'm picking it up from a Garage in Mansfield next week. My Dad has been and seen it and driven it though. He says it looks and drives very good so fingers crossed he knows what he is talking about!!!

Yeah, that car is OBDII, but a generic scanner won't be able to do config changes on the car, so real Tech2 needed for this job.

A member recently got his ECU enabled for around £50 inc VAT.  If ever you pass Brackley in Northants, I can do it cheaper, but its a little way from Windsor...

Similar to my car, but I have fitted another head unit and a CD changer, also a rear spoiler and an LPG conversion.

Professionally £1800 possibly more

DIY around £700 to £900 if you are competent, there are a few sellers on Ebay, and it is mainly care required.

I can get a setup if required from the importers and I have an ECU lead and software.
