97 (R) 2.0 Auto box problems !! Help please.
« on: 01 September 2006, 13:16:11 »

Just bought a dirt cheap 2.0 GLS Auto. I knew it had a problem with 4th gear but it was cheap and I was told it was probably either a sensor or the fluid and not the box itself. It drives ok at first in DRIVE but then slips and feels as if its in neutral. It works fine if you put it in 3.

I had a guy I know plug his diagnostic computer in and it said something was wrong with the mass air flow meter and explained this could affect the gearbox but his computer would not talk to the gearbox. I have looked on ebay and can get a new meter for £52 but wanted some advice as to if you guys think this will solve it. It did have the gearbox warning light on and would not go into sports mode prior to being connected to the computer.  :(

I am going on holiday on Monday so think I will let the garage change the fluid first to see what happens but any advice would be most welcome.  ;)

Don't despair.

Ronnie is our box specialist - he takes them apart with his teeth and rebuilds them with his toes,....

seriously dont sweat it - sure he will be on soon (he has a new delivery today so guess busy outside)

even a new box and fitting wont cost the earth ( worst case ) :) obviously dont go to dealers  ;) as most jobs can be done yourself with the excellent support on here

Hi Sharpey.

I'm not an autobox expert :(

Top up fluid (you can do this yourself) to see if that helps. Must be Dexron III

Engine managment errors may put autobox in limp mode.

Being a 2.0, you can do 'paperclip' test to check engine for errors - short pins 4 and 6 on diag connector and count dash flashes. Do a search for 'paperclip' test and you'll get info ;)

Gearbox diagnostics needs a decent code reader, such as genuine Tech2 machine - what year is your car, and where are you based?

On of our Admins, Ronald McBurger, is our resident autobox guru (misspent youth ripping Bentley boxes apart), so hopefully he'll be along shortly...

Thanks so far guys. Glad I found this site !! It's a 1997 R plate and I am based in Elland, West Yorkshire. To be honest I have not got a manual for the car yet so not sure where to top the box up. Just called at my local garage and the proprietor sucked through his teeth and laughed when I told him about the air flow meter probably causing it. I must admit it sounded like a load of cobblers when the guy said it to me but I'm no expert.

I would rather wait for some decent advise from you guys on here and have a bash myself than fork out my hard earned cash to a £30 per hour garage. They said it would be about £55 to suck out all the old fluid and replace it.

I believe the filler plug is on the auto box itself, that means jacking up the car and supporting it on axle stands.

RonaldMcBurger will be back shortly, don't worry, he'll sort you out if anyone can.

Ron will know best.......but only thing id say is if you suck the old oil out.....you carnt change the filter....i think Ron might advise taking the sump of to change it then you can replace the filter at the same time

Worse case scenerio is that box is knackered. If thats the case, you should be able to pick up a known good AR25 box quite cheap (ie less than £100).  I know Ronnie McB and Laidback66 have done this job a few times...

Doesnt Ron recommend putting a AR35 box on as they are stronger.....or is that just for oil burners??  :-/

Right guys, lets get me teeth into this one then. Sorry to keep you hanging around. i have been occupied with the new project as well as fitting duals into my corsa.

So, airflow meter effects the gearbox now does it? Mmmmm. I don't think so. Airflow is for the ECU to gauge how much fuel to add etc etc. Nothing to do with gearbox. The autobox is basically mechanical with a bit of help from its own ECU as well.

If the car starts off in first then slips before or instead of going into second, you ahve a problem. Now. the first thing to do is check the fluid colour and level. This is done with the engine running and on a flat level. I recommend getting the passenger side on the kerb, then jack and axle stand the drivers side so you have enough room and it is level.

Start the engine, then remove the level plug on the drivers side of the gearbox near the now hot exhaust!

Fluid should just trickle out. If not, it needs topping up with ATF Dexron III. If it is trickling out, it should (in an ideal world) be ribena red. If it is slightly brownish, that is just a sign of age. But if it is really brown or worse black, you have severe build up of crap.

Anyway, first things first. Fluid level and colour then report back to us.

Next step depends on fluid colour etc. Best case, fluid and filter change, worse case, gearbox change.

If the worst happens and you need to change the box, do get an AR35 if possible. You will need to swap the bellhousings over, easy enough BUT you must work in clinically clean conditions to avoid any dirt getting in.

Gearbox change will take about the whole day and you will need two very good trolly jacks, some really strong and high stands and a good selection of tools including torx.

Lets not jump the gun, but my first gut feeling is that you need a new box.
