Right guys, lets get me teeth into this one then. Sorry to keep you hanging around. i have been occupied with the new project as well as fitting duals into my corsa.
So, airflow meter effects the gearbox now does it? Mmmmm. I don't think so. Airflow is for the ECU to gauge how much fuel to add etc etc. Nothing to do with gearbox. The autobox is basically mechanical with a bit of help from its own ECU as well.
If the car starts off in first then slips before or instead of going into second, you ahve a problem. Now. the first thing to do is check the fluid colour and level. This is done with the engine running and on a flat level. I recommend getting the passenger side on the kerb, then jack and axle stand the drivers side so you have enough room and it is level.
Start the engine, then remove the level plug on the drivers side of the gearbox near the now hot exhaust!
Fluid should just trickle out. If not, it needs topping up with ATF Dexron III. If it is trickling out, it should (in an ideal world) be ribena red. If it is slightly brownish, that is just a sign of age. But if it is really brown or worse black, you have severe build up of crap.
Anyway, first things first. Fluid level and colour then report back to us.
Next step depends on fluid colour etc. Best case, fluid and filter change, worse case, gearbox change.
If the worst happens and you need to change the box, do get an AR35 if possible. You will need to swap the bellhousings over, easy enough BUT you must work in clinically clean conditions to avoid any dirt getting in.
Gearbox change will take about the whole day and you will need two very good trolly jacks, some really strong and high stands and a good selection of tools including torx.
Lets not jump the gun, but my first gut feeling is that you need a new box.
