Sticky Throttle
« on: 16 October 2006, 14:08:36 »

I have noticed, i appear to have a sticky throttle. Here's what happens.

Only seems to happen in P or N.

Idles at approximately 500rpm at tick over. If i gently give it some more revs (anything up to about 1100rpm) it seems happy and when i take my foot off the pedal it returns back to 500rpm.

If i increase it up 1200rpm and take my foot off the pedal, the engine then seems to have a mind of its own and the revs will go up to about 1700 - 1800 rpm and stay like that. The only way i can get it to return to normal idle speed is to rev it over about 2200rpm and take my foot off the pedal, and then it will drop back to 500rpm.

I haven't noticed any problems while actually driving. Is this something i should worry about? Anyone heard of it before?

Mine does a similar thing.  If I put it in neutral at 60mph-ish after idling the engine for several seconds the revs jump way up for a few seconds.  I thought it might be trying to downshift instead of just releasing everything to go to neutral.  However, I will try your test and see what mine does.

Yours isn't drive by wire, so more likely to be ICV related, despite all the cleaning its had...

From memory, at front of plenum (soz, mine isn't drive by wire, so cant say for definate). Worth checking the butterflies aren't crudded up, and can move smoothly...

Ah, OK.  Not sure what is up with mine.  Idles at 500 with a slight shake to the car, but smoother with a/c on?   :-?

a/c raises idle rpm slightly, so improves the vibration you're having. Not sure why you're getting it though...

Mine sticks occasionally, despite a good blast of Gunk. Occasionally slow to open

Check the cable into the throttle bodies.

Not too many drive by wires here.

For the flybywire units (2.2/2.6/3.2) I recommend removal and cleaning of the throttle assembly as the motor does not have as much torque as your right foot.

Its worth cleaning the breathers at the same time.

Also, when cleaning the throttle assy, pay attention to the edges of the butterfly disks, they should be clean, no carbon build-up.
On a cable operated car check that the throttles really do close....Ive seen some where some idiot has adjusted the stop screws (presumably to fix an idling problem), this means that air gets passed the throttle when it should be closed and the idle air valve is almost shut in compensation and cant regulate properly.
