Help!! Does not like the cold!!
« on: 30 October 2006, 08:03:32 »

Since the mornings have been getting colder, my car has become more and more problematic when first using it in the mornings.

It feels as though the FBW throttle doesn't want to function until it warms up because i will put my foot on the pedal and will get no response for a few seconds and then suddenly it will kick in. Once the engine is up to running temp the problem goes away.

Also, when it is cold, if i sit in the car and rev the engine, it doesn't rev smoothly throughout the range. If almost feels like a bubbling feeling occasionally, as if maybe a plug isn't firing. But this isn't something that happens consistently.

I had planned on changing the cam belt this weekend, but throttle problem was so bad on saturday morning on the way to pick up the parts i decided to wait until i got this fixed first.

Any help would be hugely appreciated...

Also pop the throttle body off and give it a real good clean, pay attention to the edges of the butterfly.

Its also perhaps worth cleaning the breathers at the same time.

is the throttle body the thing that is attached near the front of the plenum? Also, how do you clean breathers?

There is a how to in the tech guides section. It's not as bad as it sounds, trust me

If non of these things sorts the problem it may be worth changing the coolant temperature sensor for the ecu. It's on the coolant bridge anbd is the one with a plug, the one with a spade terminal is for the temperature gauge. I had similar problems with mine until it warmed up but it wasn't as bad as yours sounds. A bit unresponsive and high fuel consumption, down to 18mpg average, but a new sensor sorted it.

I also get the very high fuel usage when the engine is cold but just assumed that was normal.

Do as Marks_DTM suggests - the throttle butterflies are on the front of plenum. Cleaning breathers is in Mainatenece guides :y

I had the same problem with mine when cold starting - felt like a plug was missing initially but ok when warmed up.

Had the coolant sensor changed (£30 inc fitting) and slipped an injector cleaner into the fuel.  Now runs smooth and more responsive but not convinced it's 100 fixed.

Worth a try for the cost involved.

I haven't got round to cleaning the throttle or breathers yet, but have now noticed that if when I start the car and it is misbehaving as described, turning the engine off. Then re-starting seems to always clear the problem!

I would have a look to see if its got any codes stored, you'll need a code reader tho' , paperclip method wont work on yours.
