where is the vacuum pipe?
« on: 15 November 2006, 20:28:42 »

hi all, as my fan on a cold setting only comes out of the screen vent (no matter the switch setting) i need to check if there is any pressure feed to the switch. when i turn it it feels smooth in operation with no air hiss sounds at all. what supply hose and location do i need to check?
and am i right in saying this feed is constant at the switch and it is diverted when the switch is turned to the various settings? all to technical for me but im a quick learner! cheers tone

I believe there should be slight hiss when moving direction knob. Check vac pipe in engine bay where it goes through bulkhead near heater hoses - tend to break...

And its a  fiddley git as well, right between the two of them, a small mirror might help, if not there try and follow it along round the back of engine to T piece (iirc) and then across side of plenum to front of engine, mine rubbed through not far from T piece near aircon pipes, you could try there too.

i spied that t piece today so i know im in the right area, there is a 1.5 inc wide pipe that runs into the bulkhead so ill check in that area again, if i cant see anything i will work the other way from the switch through. less room in the engine bay than my first vauxhall car- a 1.3 viva !!

What engine?
Non-A/C / A/C / or Climate?

Most cars have two vacuum pipes going to the rubber grommit where the heater hoses pass through. One is the vacuum supply to the control panel from a vacuum storage tank near the pollen filter (this pipe pushes into a bit if rubber directly between the two heater pipes and is best re-connected by removing the upper heater pipe)
The second vacuum pipe comes from the control panel to a heater bypass valve which is intended to stop the flow of hot water when both controls are turned fully cold. These valves have been known to stick shut.

Check out the vacuum first then try to find the bypass valve (if it has one)
