Head gasket set
« on: 16 November 2006, 16:01:44 »

Guys,

Putting the cylinder head back on the brother in laws car this weekend (2.5 V6), gasket set should be delivered tomorrow.

It's maybe not the same for all head sets, but usually, do you get the sealing ring for the coolant pipe that attaches at the back of the block, and the bonded washers for the two banjo bolts that go into the top of the oil cooler, or should I be heading down to the vauxhall dealer tomorrow lunchtime? Don't want to be stuck for something on Sunday morning.

And before you ask, yes I have got a locking kit!

Generally you only get the seals for bits that are directly involved, coolant bridge seals are usually there and a (wrong) thermostat seal but not the rear coolant pipe seal or the oil cooler seals.
Be careful if you try to remove the nuts attaching oil cooler to plate, Ive had two strip recently which means new cooler.

If you ordered off ebay etc then check the set on arrival and count all the stem seals etc. I would get genuine exhaust manifold gaskets (multi-layer metal type), the pattern ones dont last long.
Check the camcover gaskets, some pattern sets use a gasket that is the same section as original and quite soft but others use a hard plastic material which is different in section, do not fit this type, get originals if in doubt.

If you removed the thermostat then check the housing for cracks and refit with silicone gasket. You would also need two o rings for the alloy pipe to thermostat.

Check your new head bolts as well, a set supplied recently was missing a washer, and no, you cant use one of the old ones.

Hi,
All top engine gaskets (kit, comprises everything that you need) £105.00 from autovaux.

No oil cooler seals
Wrong thermostat seal
Camcover gaskets that are usable or crap depending on batch...
Camcover o rings that are too small and fall out
Old type exhaust manifold gaskets that dont last

That said it can still be cheaper to buy the set and add genuine Vx camcover seals and manifold gaskets
