Should my traction button illuminate at night?
« on: 07 November 2006, 09:20:44 »

Should my traction button light up at night? Pulled the thing out of the dash this morning whilst stuck in traffic and i can't see a bulb in there.

I think it should. I have changed mine for the smaller type button and that illuminates using the wiring for the larger button, so there is power from the lights to the switch to illuminate it.

It should.

You can pop the black section off the switch which will reveal a bulb soldered into a plastic housing.

How did you do this?  This is a mod that I am very keen to do I have sourced the switch but this is as far as I have got.  Any advice would be appreciated!

Like others, I can confirm that the TC button should illuminate which the other dash switches.

I did it by moving the wiring from block for the large button to the upper block where I had a blank switch. I got the wires out of the block with their connectors by pushing the retaining clip on the connector up with a jewellers screw driver and carefully pulling the wire. I've got some spare connectors at home so I will take some photos to clarify next week when I'm at home.

Cheers for that Salty - much appreciated.  I noted that the switches have the same number of connections (three) but am not sure if they are the same electrically.

Can you clarify if the wiring is the same i.e. the same wires connect to the same terminals on the new switch it is a simple swap

I just think that the small TC button looks so much better.

Will do, I wrote all the wire colours down when I did the job. Not home for another week yet though so it will have to wait until then.

Ok to swap the wiring over first you need to remove the centre dash and unclip the wiring blocks from the back of the console, they just slide downwards. Then make a note of wire colours and which position in the block they are in. For the TC button there is a  brown wire a red/brown wire and a yellow/grey wire. I tested the original switch with a multi meter to determine how the switch operates. The red/brown and brown wires appear to be for switching the TC and the yellow/grey is for illumination at night.

Once you have worked out the wiring you need swap the wiring to the new switch position, you could cut and splice the wires but I found it neater to move the wires with connectors to their new switch position.

First remove the grey plastic clip in the connector to allow you remove the wires

A screwdriver under the edge and twist

Then pullout with pliers

Then using a small screwdriver or something slim, I used a dart. There is a small clip part on the connector itself push the clip in and pull the wire and it should slide out of the holder. This si a little awkward and may take a few attempts until you get the hang of it

Here is a picture of the connector so you can hopefully see the clip part.

Then all you have to do is put the wires into the wiring block in the switches new position.

On the small TC switch the two connectors together were the TC switching on the one I got and the one offset was the illumination connection.

Hope this is helps. Let me know if you need anymore help or if I've got anything wrong.

Wiring as found on my car looking from the front of the connector block (wires at the back)
