A smell of petrol
« on: 07 October 2006, 18:45:11 »

Whatever next!
I've started to detect a smell of fuel in the cabin when stopping or making sharp turns (at low speed).  Today it was quite obvious (before, I'd assumed it was someone in front).  The MID display is about right - when warmed on idle ~0.2g/? with the AC off.  Fuel consumption has been a tad high on the MID for a while (but short journeys, winter etc).  Nothing obviously leaking about the engine bay although on idle I can smell just a whiff of petrol.  No EML when running.  No running or starting problems.  The boot area smells clean - no fuel there.  The interior fan is normally on at least a little.  I gave it a little 'testing' this afternoon, all sound pretty good and plenty of 'load' without any problems or daft fat spots (that I noticed anyway).
Any thoughts?  Is there some pressure test I can carry out.  Only significant work done recently is cam belt (a while back - don't think thats it) and wishbones (twice - they did the wrong bushes) - and geometery alignment.  I don't drive the car often, but it seems to be getting worse/more frequent.

The idle g/hr seem about right

If you've had intake off laterly, just check the fuel hoses where they screw on to injector rail.

Hi.  No the inlet (manifold?) was undisturbed - or do you mean the air inlet (bag pipes?).  I checked the two shielded hoses on that side today, they seemed to be dry - my first thoughts.

- of course I meant flat spots earlier.

Still the odd whiff of petrol, or am I suffering further paranoia. Has anyone else noticed this (the fuel, not my mental state)?

Seems related to braking/stopping, a few sharp turns either way and I noticed nothing.

Where does the 'fresh' air come from for the cabin.

Re: A smell of petrol UPDATE

Well it seems it wasn't petrol but maybe oil fumes.  Possibly the filler cap wasn't on quite right and the odd dribble over the exhaust manifold brought the smell inside.  Anyway, on now, no oil (touch wood) and no smell.
Just thought I'd let everyone know.
