Smokin 2.5v6 with 124k mls
« on: 28 November 2006, 19:26:31 »

My Omega is dropping oil from both the cam covers, onto the exhaust heat shields. It is now with a mechanic who states that the cam covers could be warped as this is a common fault on the V6 Omega.
I  think the engine is being pressured up because of blocked engine breather pipes and filter, which I did tell the mechanic. The cam cover gaskets have obviously popped re the pressure.
Does any body know of this so called common fault and also do you think I am correct in regards to the pressure problems.
Any input from you guys would be very much appreciated before I get stung for £80 per cam cover.

In my limited experience I have never heard of a warped cam cover. If you let him charge you for new ones and dont clean the breathers, you will be paying out again very soon

I agree, make sure he uses the Genuine Vauxhall seals and BLACK Vauxhall sealant.

Don't have part numbers to hand someone will have!

Cheers!  :y
Thats what I was thinking! If they clean the filter and pipes, replace the cover gaskets and wack on some decent gasket sealant ,I can't see a problem. As I don't  think there is much pressure in the Cam covers ordineraly.I always thought that the cams were just splashed with oil. I realise that the cam bearings are under pressure but not the cams them selves.

Hmmm....problem is...if he's already told you the covers are warped and you've disagreed, he will probably go out of his way to prove himself right. Be careful this doesn't escalate into an arguement. That could prove expensive.

Yes your right but the mechanic is only looking for the problem at the moment , he will give me a quote for repairng it when he decides what the fault is.
It seems he was told by a local engine machine shop that the covers warp. Who are
'very helpful 'but also supply things like cam covers etc, strange heh!

See Maintenence Guides section for part numbers (or follow the guide and do it yourself ;))

well the cam covers are made of plastic for some reason best known to Vauxhall !!

the bolts should be tightened to 8Nm (ie, not a lot) - it is not unheard of for them to be overtightened and warp. But the breathers need cleaning and those gaskets need changing first. You can change the covers too to be on the safe side, but IIRC that adds about £150 to the cost ...
