Cam belt kit on Ebay.............any good??????
« on: 11 December 2006, 23:05:45 »

As above, I need to buy a new Cam belt and the kit, I've found a company Vauxcentre selling them for about £78 on Ebay..................................... :-/

Anyone else bought this, or any opinions.......................I know a Vauxhall dealer charges more................................is their kit any better as its originals, or is this ebay company also selling original parts?

Cheers Kevin

Hi there,
I think I've seen what you are looking at. The Gates belt is a good sign, however Autovaux charge about the same, and they are a physical company, not one that exists only on the internet. As lots of the people here will tell you, its the tensioner that goes, which makes the belt skip, which stuffs the heads, so that's the important part. It is also recomended to change the water pump at the same time, as to do it later, you have to take it all off again ;D. There was also a recent case on the forum of a chap who had the belt/tensioner go, which ruined the heads. Several people rallied round, got replacement heads for him, and got his car going great. A couple of weeks later the aux pulley (?) broke up, which split the aux belt, and bits of this got inside the cambelt cover, and jamed the cam belt, making it jump a few teeth, and ruined the replacement heads. :'( I'm going to be changing mine soon, and will go for quality bits and change things that look suspect, as if the head goes its going to be expensive, and time wasting, and I don't want to be mucking about looking for replacement heads this time of year! :)

Email them and ask if original Vx, and if so then ask for the P/N.

Some aftermarket kits are good - the tensioner is usually made by SKF anyway, and as long as the belt is made by a known manufacturer (e.g. Conti, Pirelly, etc) then the kit should be OK - so if not Vx then ask for the makers of the tensioner and belt.

Bought my 2.0 cambelt kit off Vauxcentre, it was all genuine GM parts with the little hologram stickers on. But I also bought a water pump off them, which wasn't genuine GM.

They were very helpful though, unlike the outfit I bought my V6 gasket set off!

They just replied saying its all GATES stuff, which I presume means its good quality,
I have also found this water pump on Ebay, I know everyone says replace it when you do the cambelt, I take it this is the right one??????

The 2.0 kit you got sounds very similar to what Autovaux supplied me a GM Cambelt kit and a bilstein waterpump.

At the time I wasn't sure of the waterpump so I contacted VX and they were going to supply me the same item for £30 more or something silly like that.

I bought an EGR valve from vauxcentre, it arrived next day - worked fine (didn't cure my problem tho  :() and if anything was a slightly better design than the original one I took off.

I bought a Gates kit that looks identical to that shown in the listing from a local motor factor, seem to remember it cost me about £100-ish inc. VAT - so if it was me I'd go for it !!!

Bear in mind though that you might need to supply your engine number, I think there are differences in the kits ...

You will need to loan , buy , rent a locking kit, and get a copy of the DVD  - £3.00 if you are going to do the job yourself.

People on here loan out locking kits -   so do AutoVaux [£15.00 + deposit from memory]

Another useful tool to have to hand is a 30mm cranked ring spanner.
