Help! Bonnet release lever has gone floppy
« on: 10 December 2006, 15:32:43 »

Hi,

Worst day ever. Not only do I have this problem on my 2000 facelift MV6 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1165759890 but on going out to the car to have a nose under the bonnet and check everything was pushed in I pulled the bonnet release lever, there was some resistance as normal but when I pulled it further for it to "catch" it just went loose and now it wobbles around all slack. I can't get under the bonnet to investigate my slightly more important problem.

Please tell me this is a common problem that can be easily fixed...for free.

 :-[

Thanks

Get somebody to apply light pressure on the front edge of the bonnet and reach around the rear of the release handle and pull the cable.....

Then once the bonnet is open, pop the small black cover above the passenger side headlight off and you should see a small clamp for the bonnet cable, slacken it, pull the cable through whilst watching the release catch on the slam panel, tighten it back up when you start to see the release catch start to 'twitch'.

I had the same on my VeccyC.....couldnt get the bonnet open half the time.....release lever would go all loose....but bonnet wouldnt pop up. Had to get someone to pull up on the bonnet at the same time i pulled the release

If Marks answer doesnt cure it......try applying liberal amounts of 3 in 1 oil or similar (once you have got the bonnet open) to the sprung loaded plunger thingy (whatever its called) and the receiving mechanism (bonnet lock) . It did the trick for my Veccy  :y

Also check that the lever is still attached to the footwell side panel properly

Matchless, I have a feeling that this is the case, I'm going to be looking at it tonight when I'm back from work. It is VERY floppy and there is plenty of movement from side to side as well as back and forward. How do I go about reattaching it correctly?

Have you ever changed the brake cable on your push bike? It's the same method - barrel nipple on the end of the cable.

right just managed to do this with a friend, he put pressure on the bonnet and i pulled the cable, worked a treat  :y However I couldn't find the clamp on the passenger side so I'll need to do this again.

Could someone point it out to me on this pic of my engine bay\/

What's happened to your washer bottle? Shouldn't the cap be on the other side of that hole above it???

You can't see the washer bottle from that side, the filler cap for the bottle on the facelift is on the right hand side. The bottle itself is part of the front bumper.

Although i will add, you coolant bottle looks very dirty! and dark. How hot does the car run? and when was the coolant last changed?

It looks like a high miller (guessing from the engine bay) i'd give the full coolant system including the rad a good clean.

Also i spy a cruise cable... so you will have the 3.0 V6. Check out the Maintenance Guides for a how2 on cleaning the breathers and throttle body, that will give a huge improvement in performance if they have never been cleaned!

It's a lot easier to spy the EGR valve though.  ;)

As Mark says scroll to the right for the washer bottle.

I don't see a cruise cable but I do see it has the aux. cooling pump below the expansion bottle (can see the two pipes to it fastened to the expansion bottle). Ones with that pump don't have cruise, except when fitted later.
