2.2 Catalyst
« on: 12 November 2006, 23:09:25 »

Hi people,

My Cat has gone on my 2.2 'Y' reg.

I really cant afford to buy a new Cat at £230+ at the moment...but the car is no longer driving i.e. its being 'strangled' i think by a broken part of the Cat blocking up the exhaust causing a back pressure.....what im going to do as a temporary 'quick fix' (to get me past Xmas etc) is to cut off the Cat and weld in a straight bit of pipe.

What i want to know is will the management system accept that and if not(which i pressume it wont) how do i 'fool it' and by-pass it

Cheers
(Please help....im really really sick to death driving around in my £65 a week to fuel Carlton!)

Try Megavaux, they were breaking a 2.2 so may have a good second hand part available.

Or, if your realy desperate, you could weld/clamp in a replacement CAT or sports CAT.

Possibly more likely a fuel/ignition problem damaging the cat...

I presume your £230 is for a pattern Cat !

That place near Mark in Nottingham, autoparts or something like that provided me with a pattern Cat for my 2.2 early this year, fitted a treat  ;)

If you're eating up cats in two years, either something is damaging it (unburnt fuel) or the cats are of appalling quality (and original Vx parts are decent quality)

Was the replacement cat a VX part, can I sudgest that you hone Vauxhall Luton and speak to them, they may pay 50% of the replacement cast.

This is a cheaper pattern part, noisey to:

No it was from some tyre/exhaust place...not even ATS or Budget so i reckon it was just crap quality..

I agree but, apart from the Cat the car is fine...as i said its not long been serviced and the fuel MPG is ok etc....think its just cheap parts

Update on the Cat....

I took the car to my mates garage and got him to put it on the emisions tester for the MOT...the Cat is in perfect working order! :-?

Would have passed the MOT with no bother.....so the Cat is working ok its just rattling about.....there is however a small(and i mean small!) dent on the bottom of the Cat box,my mate reckons a stone has hit it causing something to break inside with the impact causing the noise
When you are under the car is really obvious that something inside the Cat box is loose and rattling around...but what ever it is,its blocking the pipe now and again causing the car to back pressure, making it want to drive like its running on 3 cylinders! and then other times its fine... ::)

End of the day it still needs to be replaced with a new Cat!

Anyone selling some lucky white heather!??

 :)

Just something to consider...

Yes the cat has had an impact, and yes there is something lose inside but are you sure this is causing the preformance problem? Could you also have early symptoms of coil pack failure?
I have an Astra IV which had occasional power loss and was making odd exhaust noises, all cleared up when the No3 coil eventually died completely. Lucily it didnt kill the cat before becomming a permanent fault.

Your replacement CAT, will be a ceramic type, and thus as pointed out, the reason for the labrynth breaking up ( maybe )

The more expensive CAT's have a stainless labrynth, these tend NOT to break up with impact !

Now you know why there are cheaper ones, and dearer ones   :o

Very possibile mate...seems like the cat though since it only started a day or so after the cat started to rattle! but i wont rule it out...will find out once the cat has been replaced!

yip sounds like it...the receipt i have from 2 years ago doesn't even mention a makers name on it so its obviously been a cheapy...
And i know you only get what you pay for..... ::) been in the motor trade for a while! ;D

If a cheap one is £230 what the h*ll is a VX one!!???

 :o :o

Its a bit annoying having to change it since the damn thing still works!

typical!! >:(
