climate control bearing
« on: 20 December 2006, 20:18:58 »

Hi me again ok i have had this prob since a week of getting the car (2.5 V6) it started with a funny squelling noise comming from the engine bay i took me a while but i found out eventually it was the bearing on the clucth for the climate control i phone vauxhalls to get a price they told me that they dont do the clutch assembly on it's own and that i would have to buy a new compressor at just over £300 but all i need is the bearing has anyone got any ideas on if there is a cheaper alternative to this and also i was told i could still get hot air (without the climate control) but i cant seem to get any the car is freezing all the time even when the engine is hot still nothing

Thanks

Paul

There isn't a bearing on the clutch for the aircon compressor, it's just a plate held by three flat springs that is pulled to the drive pulley when it's activated. There are bearing in the compressor but you need to replace the compressor if they go. This hasn't anything to do with heating the car, that's got to be a different problem.

Does the compresssor squeal when it's not runinng, for example when you've selected ECO, or only when running? With the engine runing the pulley always turns but the end plate only turns when the compressor is switched on.

The aircon compressor pulley runs on its own bearings, independantly of the compressor shaft bearings. If the noise is constant, ie it doesnt go away when you turn ECO on then it is the pulley bearing at fault.

You need a special puller to remove the clutch assembly, iirc its about 22mm OD with a fine thread,
You undo a central nut, pull off the clutch with the special tool, (watch out for an adjustment shim) inside the pulley is a circlip which is removed then use a 3-leg puller to remove pulley from compressor.

With pulley on bench, remove another circlip and press out the old bearing. Reassembly is the reverse..........

It is possible to do this with the compressor in situ but a bit fiddly. You could try asking an A/C specialist to do it for you or to remove the clutch for you and you do the rest.

Cant help with the noise, but my car threw a wobbly last week and wouldn't give out any heat.  Suspected the heater bypass valve at first, but both pipes to matrix hot.  Reset the climate ( press auto and off together for 5 secs IIRC) and lo - all became warm again.

There are two or three different makes of compressor used but the bearings should be replaceable in all of them.
There will be a circlip locating the bearing outer, remove this then press out the old bearing in a vice using sockets, tube etc. The bearings are standard parts, once you find the numbers engraved on it then look up simply bearings on the www.

Is your friend an aircon guy / where did he get the puller?
