Went about changing the oil today, got the bits together, jacked the car up and drained the oil...

So far so good.

Lent on a spanner on the filter cap and the whole body starts turning  :-?

15 minutes later got the body off, (the threaded boss in the body is free floating)

then had to heat the aluminium body up to crack the cap free. As the title, 15 Nm it wasn't

Now stuck as I need to replace the (now) three bits of seal under the filter body before I can put it together and go to work.

Do you have any flange sealent......this will work as a temporary measure.....

Note, its easy to fit once the cap is off as the threaded centre boss has a hex on it (27mm I think....)

Its too late now but....if you come across this problem again then get a second pair of hands to hold the filter body with a strap wrench whilst you get a 24mm socket and breaker bar on the cap nut,  get some load on the bar then smack it (the bar) with a hammer.

No sealant of any kind, (until I do the cam covers)

  It is a 27mm

After getting it on the floor and warmed up, I held the body with a chain type filter wrench and still had to whack the ring spanner with a hammer.

As an aside,

Do you have the seal number, and is there suposed to be a seal in the drain plug? Number?

The X30XE drawing I have shows an angledfilter seating, not a straight fit onto the engine so I don't wan't to quote this number to someone who may know less than me

I had the same problem with mine ... ended up putting the casing in a vice and then using the 27mm socket on the end of a 2 ft breaker bar, even then it was tight !!

the hollow bolt that fixes the housing to the block (with a hole through the middle) is fixed using a 12mm hex driver, torque up to 45 Nm / 33 lbf. ft.

what engine number is it as some parts are different ... it appears that the filter housing my have straightened out later !!

my previous and current miggy's both had a straight filter casing ...

Car was privately owned, down south, the guy owned his own company and had his mechanic service the 7 LPG converted vehicles and his car obviously.

As I was (still am) leaking oil slightly I hadn't changed the filter, only poured new stuff in the top

The oil filter housing is pressure diecast mazak (Zinc), the cap has a male thread as part of the casting so it screws directly into the diecast body.

The filter housing body has a floating, threaded stud in the base which needs a 27mm socket to fit to the engine casing. the seal that sits in the mating face of the engine block has hardened and broke when I pratted about trying to get the housing off.

I'm talking about item 12 - the sealing ring that goes between the filter housing and the engine block. It's P/N 90573241 for engine nos. 08300419 to 080843415, P/N 9240161 from engine no. 0843416 onwards - hence the question about the engine number ... and yes the filter housing (item 11) is straight on both my current and previous miggy's - not angled as shown.

Yes..er No!

This one is definitely a retained fixing through the body.

Have been to the Vaux shop, they show the same drawing.

They also pulled up the seal numbers for the reg/engine number and the engine number preceeds the oil filter assembly.

Their records show a spin on filter type

hmmm ..... I wonder if the engine has been swapped at some point? Does it have the extended plenum chamber, as I thought retail MV6's were post mini-facelift so would have this ...

Not all - my retail mini facelift MV6 has proper (and cheaper) oil filter. The paper element one appear to come in at some point in late 98, early 99.

Right, is now sorted,

This is the filter body and cap


This is the floating bush (27mm socket as Mark advised) in the bottom of the body, this has an extra seal. I now know that this seal is part  No 90573241, which is the same as on the EPC for the early models


Job took about 20 mins once I had the seal. Lookers at Star City had 6 newer seals in stock and non of the older type so I had to go back 1 hour later once they had got one delivered.

glad to hear you got it sorted in the end ... but what a PITA !!

well at least you shouldn't have any more problems with it being done up too tight so long as you're the one doing the changes from now on
