Some of the software I use is multiprocessor aware (some is shareware - virtualdub, some is bought - TMPGENXP).

I think new case is a good idea as I might water cool.
I'm fairly certain all XP Pros support 2 processors max.  Posh Vistas reqd for quad core non server Windows.

The route you are going, keep an eye on Dell/HP etc for special deals...

Strange only 2 cores supported so dual core will be the best I can do then without using Microsofts DRM wet dream.

Sorry if I am hijacking the thread, but could I ask for any Firewire/USB recomendations for Video Digitising. I recently was given a couple of videos and asked if I could make a DVD. I firstly tried my Nebula card, but couldn't get the sound over. I then tried a JVC camcorder with video input, but  there was no control over the signal levels, saturation etc, and the picture quality was not very good. I ended up using a FlyDVB-T Duo PCMCIA card plugged into a P4 2.8 laptop, but this was software compression so was a bit rough, with the laptop processor at 100% for most of the time. It worked after a few goes, but I would like a hardware compression unit. P.S.  I tried the Trial version of the TMPGenc DVD software. Its very good, but that laptop is now infested with adverts for all sorts of useful things that I can't get rid of !!!. :y

XP was released in 2001.  Dual core chips were not available, and even the best workstations were 2 processors, hence what XP Pro was designed to take.

Server versions oviously can handle more...

Video digitising - I have used two methods

Analogue video in via video cardand sound via sound card - only acceptable format was raw AVI - not even DV compression!!!!

now use my MiniDV analogue in to do it - works well - then firewire to PC
