Sorry for got to mention I adjusted the cable aswell first and the two rubber wind in/out gromets to no avail so I adjusted the middle pin. so in fairness I think I did them right.

Thank god for that.

In reality, the middle pin only sets the bonnet height relative to the wings, the rubber bungs set the amount of pressure the middle pin has against the release catch (and hence how hard it is to pull the cable) and the bonnet left to right adjustment (i.e. make it higher on the left or right at the expense of lower on the opposite side).

So hence, you wind the rubber bungs in to release the pressure and hence make it easier to pull the cable (having adjusted it!) and only then do you adjust the center pin if the bonnet is to high or low relative to the wings...

Adjusted mine today, works fine now although the release still feels tight, certainly more so than most other cars.

The two rubber bungs are screwed in as far as they'll go, and I don't know how to do anything with the big spring mechanism. Any suggestions?

Apply a little grease to the moving parts of the catch, if you haven't already.
