TOWING ELECTRICS
« on: 20 January 2007, 20:59:27 »

Gents & Girlies,
Had my Omega for nearly 4 years, fitted my own towbar, non OEM, Towsure Eclipse (Detatchable) Did my electrics, dead easy, there's a multiplug in the boot behind the latch panel, had to put a fuse in the underdash fuse box to give constant 12 v....  What a breeze!  I have a regulation indicator bulb failure buzzer in the boot. retro fit..  It's always foxed me, even with my full set of wiring diagrams, qualifications in many electrical avenues, that there is a trailer indicator lamp on the dash of my 1999 saloon...  How do we make that illuminate as a warning for failed trailer bulbs....   Come on guys, one of you must have the answer...  Shall we call it a challenge????? I may even give a prize for the winning answer, ( No light -No prize, Guys)

Mine are spliced with scotch locks so no hope of dash light.  But I always check the operation of all bulbs whenever trailer or caravan attached b4 setting off - call me old fashioned if you like  ;)

In reply to both previous answers, 1st, 1st,  Do you happen to know which flasher unit / relay etc, the bulb is obvious!  2nd, 2nd I fully agree,  Call me a dinosaur, and at 41 too, I always think it's right to double check everything and then again after a few miles...   If I could only count the amount of times that I have had to assist my mates on a campsite, changing 12n's & 12s's plugs and sockets, running loose wires under caravans just as a get me home, However I do like the tell tale lights / buzzers, First Line of Defence n' all...

Any more info, diags etc, would be GR8..

well, two things come to mind that I've read here or elsewhere in the past, one is that the light flashes in sync with the trailer's indicators - not when they have failed - and secondly that the bulb isn't always fitted in the dash?

Then again my memory could be failing me on both counts  ;)

The relay for hooking up a light has an extra pin but the standard socket is set up for it. The old Astra I had only required the relay fitted as there was a bulb fitted in the dash but the Omega didn't work with the proper relay so maybe just needs a bulb. One day I'll get round to checking it out as Vaux/ OPel are one of the best manufacturers for running the additional wiring for accessories on the standard build.

in a slightly related way to the topic. i fitted some high level indicators to a recovery van and just joined into the original wiring. this put the towing light on the dash and it flashes when the indicators are on!

Don't suppose that you have a part number, wiring diagram or anything like that do you,

To get the towbar symbol to work you need a 4 pin flasher unit to replace the standard one and will probably need to fit the bulb in the instrument cluster.
Some low spec cars (eg my old GLS) dont have a wire in the 4th flasher hole.

Note that the bulb failure module wont work properly with a trailer or caravan connected. It looks for a minimum current in each circuit to detect an open circuit bulb so you could have a blown bulb on the traier or car and not know.

The pos feed to the trailer multiplug was provided to operate a set of relays for the trailer lights (not intended as a fridge or charge feed) so that the bulb failure module did not have to carry the extra current for the trailer bulbs. I think one of the boxes in the Vx kit is bulb failure warning for the trailor bulbs.
