Worth repairing?
« on: 28 January 2007, 09:06:40 »

My 2.5 V6, N reg. Starting to accumulate a whole range of "issues". I'm faced with 2 options, either, give it some TLC and keep it plodding on for 6 months before the MOT runs out - OR sell it, (prob for spares/repair.

* Gearbox is slipping a tiny bit (Can live with it, it's not got much worse in 4 months).
* It's eating tyres on the o/s front
* Coolant leaking at a rate of 1 litre/300 miles
* Slight steering wobble at 50ish, and when braking (not excessive, but there).
* Paintwork on bootlid shot.
* Exhaust mid-section has got a big hole in.
* Damage to drivers door lock and surrounding paintwork where some arse tried to break in
* Same as above, to petrol cap, where some arse stole my fuel. Now won't lock.
* Crease on n/s rear door, thanks to a fool in a car park. Starting to rust nicely.

I've lived with all the above for ages, and in fairness to the Meega it keeps going. The only concern I've got at the moment, is that I pulled in for some petrol, and I could smell burning oil. I'd also had a couple of recent intermittent misfires.

So I pulled a plug lead, and sure enough - wells are full of oil :(

So - rocker gaskets and breathers. Breathers were done 7k miles ago so I guess could be due.

I'm aware that it needs to be genuine gaskets, but I'm also aware that the cost of genuine gaskets is probably half the cars value!!

My question - is it worth doing? On the basis that I'd also need new leads, at cost of about £40 for pattern bits, to say nothing of whatever bits I need to fix the coolant leak.

On a plus point, it NEVER fails to start, and handles great, with great brakes, great toys, fantastic MID...

Dunno what to do :(

May be worth more to me in bits, because the engine is fantastic..

Possibly find a nice elite with a shot engine, and transfer bits over?

Whatever I do, I don't have much money to do it.....

It's also had a new timing belt kit and water pump 7k miles ago

Bear in mind I won't have any labour costs, I'm capable of doing any of it. Just the cost of bits...

Personally I would look at a cheap(ish) project car (a bit of patience will find one under £500). Use your current one as a donor and sell off spare bits when done to make some money back. :)

Good plan. I'm going to look at a 2.0 Omega (yeah, I know it's not a V6) but it's got a multipoint LPG system and is a manual... I'm going to see it this afternoon. It's being sold as spares/repairs because MOT has expired, but obviously I'm on high alert for any potential probs, so I'll be checking it closely.

Also got my eye on some cream coloured leather if it's cheap enough ;D

Thankfully it's only up the road from me.... I wouldn't travel, to see a 2.0.

It looks immaculate, and no, it's not on ebay ;)

Girlfriend I guess will come, kicking and screaming. Although, I'm going to take her out for a treat afterwards

££££ :(

The fire one wouldn't be worth an awful lot to me, because electrics are not my strong point, but on the bright side, if it's going cheap, I'd give something... I'd like to know about spec/age/location etc

I'm turning into Mr McB the second with these project cars  ::)
