Alternator problem ??
« on: 28 January 2007, 21:22:41 »

Greetings people, I appear to have a slight problem with my pride and joy ( 2.5L, '99, Elite)

When engine running there is a squeel (bit like fan belt squeel, but not as high pitched) seems to be coming from alternator.  It's quite loud on start-up then settles down at idle, when accelerating, gets loud again.  I'm guessing that it is poss a bearing going.   :(

now for the questions.

Is there any way to test for bearing failure ?

Does any one happen to know how much replacement bearings would be?

Can the the aux drive belt be removed without disturbing anything at the front of the engine ( so alternator can be removed) ?

How long would it take the average Joe to remove alternator ?

Are there any special tools required to remove and fit new bearings?

Of course my diagnosis could be wrong, but noise is def coming from that side of engine.

Any answers/observations would be much appriciated

 :)

From experience with other cars (not Omega), the bearing is bought by size (match internal/extrenal diameters and width) and costs pennies, even if you go for top brands e.g. SKF or Timken. Can see why it would be different with the Omega’s alternator…

Sorry can't help with the other queries..

The only special tools needed are a spline drive (like a torx but with more splines) to remove the pulley and a 3 legged puller plus some levers to remove the bearings....a set of reasonable quality bearings is about 12-14 quid...

Whilst you have it apart, might be worth servicing the elctricals at the same time.

I know a scrappy with a 2.5 Elite alternator, I took it off the engine for him on Saturday!

Trouble is he's in Basingstoke. Doubt it would be expensive either.

PM me if you want the details.

Thanks for the assistance guys.

Thanks for the offer JasonH, rather fancy overhauling unit. Good advice Barge captain, would be worth fitting new regulator while it's off, sods law, if I didn't it would go!

will be ordering some bearings from simplybearings, pennies, not like main dealer, £14 for 1 !!!!   :o
