Secondary or  air con problem, i think?
« on: 19 February 2007, 21:00:32 »

I thought I had a hole in the exhaust, but after poking around.

There is a pipe from the bottom of the offside exhaust, which comes round the front of the engine via a 2" rubber flexible joint.

The rubber was in bits, fairly well burnt

So I fitted a "spare" and thought that was it. This morning I started the car and it sounded as thought the exhaust had fell off, the "new" rubber was in bits.

Then I found the real spare, still attached to the spare pipe.

Question is, will the real rubber pipe melt, because theres a problem or did the last rubber pipe melt because it was the wrong material??

OK, Cats have always rattled like a couple of coppers in a tin. So how do you check them?

Also read in a different thread that I could stuff the pipe with an AA battery  :-/

My thinking, is if the cats are blocked, the exhaust has to find another way out....  ....and will pop AA batts out like a missile...

So does that stainless steel pipe come out of the exhuast, and where does it go to?

Misslies won't do the rad much good  :-?

Just re-read the reply, if the cat is blocked there is pressure going down the stainless pipe. Correct ?

The pipes are indeed part of the air injection setup and connect to the exhaust manifold.

If a cat or centre section is blocked then you get lots of back pressure which travels down the pipe you have shown, across the metal pipe on the front of the engine to the other exhaust..........the rubber coupling gets hot and melts (it does not have any exhaust gases passing through it when its working properly)........
