Plus all the other hassles of fitting HIDs - level sensors, control units, washers....

Ah, right, sorry.  Its difficult to tell them apart.

Don't pay too much for 2nd hand units, as they can seize and need freeing up. £105 + VAT (TC) from dealer...

All I would worry about is projectors.  HID's are a lot of trouble for not that much gain over projectors.

There have been quite a few discussions about retro-fitting HId lights. I think the bottom line is that for pre-facelift you can get the projector-type (mini-facelift 98-00) if you have an earlier type, and then for for +50 bulbs, and that's about it... should do the trick and not tto costly or painful to install.

HIDs are a *huge* difference over projectors IMO, debatable whether it's worth the cost of retro-fitting them but there's no comparison in terms of the quality of light. When you've been used to HIDs for a few years you realise just how yellow halogens are (yes that includes the +50% ones, which are mandatory IMO as cheaper ones are woeful). The only time I'd say halogens compare with HIDs is when the roads are really wet, the whiter light of HID doesn't perform so well in these conditions so halogen is almost as good, but in all other conditions there's no contest. There's a good reason why almost all police spec Omegas had HID lights even though the rest of the car was poverty spec :)
