I notice a fair few people are suffering oil leaks at the moment...and now I have one!
'95 3.0 Elite as most of you know, has had a new cambelt, tensioner, aux belt and now knock sensor on the LH bank.
When I did the knock sensor last week, I did have to give the alternator a fair few hefty whacks to free it. So I wonder if the oil leak is related, as it has only happened since I cleared the EML by changing the knock sensor? Now what's odd here is that I had the plenum off (again! to do the breathers) today and there was no sign of oil in the plug wells. So maybe cam covers OK - I thought they might have gone now the engine is producing the 'full beans'...
Oil appears to be pooling on the top 'lip' of the front of the sump, to the offside of the crank pulley...I have felt around what I assume (as it's going into the front of the crank) the oil pressure switch, which is soaked, but more oddly the cable is also soaked all the way up to where the cable goes into it's plastic tray in the timing belt cover.
A small amount of oil seems to be dripping down the back near the gearbox as well. I did a service today with GM Semi-Synth and I noticed the old sump plug was a bit loose, so replaced that and got a new washer, however it seems to me that it's not leaking from the sump plug - it's coming from somewhere higher up. New oil filter as well but that doesn't appear to be leaking.
Did have a go at cleaning off the engine and bay with Gunk then watching for drips, but I can't seem to see where it is coming from. There is a strongish smell of hot oil from the engine after a run with a little smoke (sometimes) when the bonnet is opened, so I guess some oil is hitting the manifold or downpipe somewhere.
I'm willing to do the cam cover gaskets, but is the general consensus (given no oil in the plug holes, on the HT leads or the plastic around the plug holes) that's what has gone? If anyone has any other ideas, let me know!
