Breather cleaning
« on: 12 March 2007, 18:16:52 »

A little confused here chaps.

Following my previous post over the weekend about the hissing from the oil filler cap I thought i'd have a look at the breather today after work.

I've printed the guid from this site but it's a bit awkward to follow as the pictures have gone.  Anyway, the pipes i could get to were totally clogged up but in the guid it mentions the 3 smaller pipes that need cleaning.  I'm assuming the 3 smaller pipes are actually inside the black ecotec box ontop of the plenum, if this is the case how on earth do i get into this box as it looks sealed and i've not been able to do anything with it.

On the plus side the hissing from the oil filler has stopped now that i've cleaned out the pipes that i could get to but obviously i'd like to do it properly.

Feel a bit of a fool to keep posting really basic stuff, especially seeing how i'm supposed to be an engineer and therefore am supposed to understand all things mechanical (CNC engineer by the way, so if anyone needs any heads skimming i'm your man  :) )

Anyway, any advice is much appreciated.

Don't worry mate - I ask dim questions too. (A Danish chap once said to me - there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers - wise man!)

I'm assuming this is a 2.5/3L we're talking about - I'm a bit confused you talk about three small hoses though?  There are two small and two big (really only one as they join at a Y jn).

Anyway,
There's a plastic cover (says Ecotec on it) which clips on to the top of the plenum -its not too difficult to unclip, but be careful your not trying to lever off the whole of the black plastic thing - its just the cover you're removing.   Under there is the hidden screw.  Undo this and the main body of the black plastic thing will come off.  I'm not sure but you may need to remove the throttle body to get it off (worth doing to clean that too) in which case I'm pretty sure you need to remove (or loosen) the plenum to get access to the bolts on the front.  Obviously you need to remove the hoses from the rear.

Did you also clean the plastic and metal boxes down the back that the hoses connect to?

Does that help?

Cheers

Ian

Hi cleaned my breather pipes last week when I changed Rocker cover gaskets. Much easier to follow guide I think when Plenum is removed.
But as guide says 4 pipes at back of Black Ecotec cover.Remove and clean. As you can see 2 outside pipes join and become one. When 2 smaller middle pipes are removed make sure that the metal pipes they connect to are cleaned as per guide using piece of wire in small hole. I was amazed how blocked mine were. As per guide unclip Ecotec cover which exposes fixing bolt. At this pont I struggled and had to remove (4 bolts) throttle assembly not sure if nessacry but thought pipes might break so thought better safe than sorry. Be careful with gaskets. I could not believe how blocked this assembly was and I am still not entirely happy with one of the chambers and will be having another try in the near future. ( basically one tube did not seem as clear as other three slight resistance felt when blowing into it). Follow the guide for cleaning at all points and you should have no problems.

Thats what i was looking for.  IN the guide when it mentions 3 smaller pipes i was thinking it meant some pipes that were maybe located inside the actual plastic breather box thats sits on top of the plenum.

I'll give it another go when i do the rocker gaskets this coming weekend.

True.
I shudder to think what Vauxhall would charge to clean breathers and change gaskets. In my case about £65 for gaskets and goo then £30 for Ostiapth to put my Back right sure sign of getting old.

Yeah, I did my breathers a couple of weeks ago, trouble is you sort of lie over the front to get to the engine. Its nice and comfy, but a pain getting back up :P

one thing I did do on mine which made life easier when working on the cam covers, breathers etc. is to get a kneeling pad, put that on the bumper and kneel on that over the engine. Mine's a facelift so the grille lifts with the bonnet, on a prefacelift you'd need to remove the grille but that's only 3 screws anyway  :)
