tech 2 - any good?
« on: 21 March 2007, 12:39:27 »

i have found this tech 2 on e-bay

just wondering what you think of it......

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110102259231&rd=1&rd=1

i presume it can only read the codes, not update the autobox software/remove fault codes from the system

thanks,   stu

standard cheapo tech2.

s/w is dire, but mostly works (not always in english though), and you must have a proper com port on laptop, usb adapters rarely work.

can read most codes, and attempt to clear them.

cannot do upgrades etc...

As the dealers wil charge £70 or so to plug their proper Tech II they're cheap enough to pay for themselves if you diagnose and repair any fault.

OTOH there is the paperclip, and it can cost up to £100 for a usable serial port card if your laptop doesnt have one.

Trains may have been invented here, but public transport is a foreign concept!

User Iggy21uk has a better non genuine one, around £250 ish I think. Still not sure if it can (yet) do upgrade type stuff.

A real Tech2 is not finacially viable to buy.

Upgrades, such as autobox/cruise/etc, need a valid TIS subscription as well under real Tech2, so I imagine still required under any other cheapo device that may possibly be able to do it.

Depends how old your car is as to whether you can.

Fair point. I just borrowed my oldish Dad's lap top that already has a serial port.

so the best way really (esp. for upgrades), is to pay someone who knows what they're doing.......

Can it do 'tech1' type cars that have 16 pin connector. I'm thinking specifically early Omegas?

It lists Omega A from 87 - only engine management, later  years more options show.
