OTOH there is the paperclip, .
Depends how old your car is as to whether you can.
If you can't do the paperclip then you should be able to use many generic OBD2 scanners, and those are readily available in USB.

User Iggy21uk has a better non genuine one, around £250 ish I think. Still not sure if it can (yet) do upgrade type stuff.

No it cannot  do upgrades . Shows / resets codes, shows live data & more

If I had an had the lead can can do cars that need a tech 1
Can it do 'tech1' type cars that have 16 pin connector. I'm thinking specifically early Omegas?

If thats the Aldl type connector - yes - I dont have the lead and so can not  try it, but its on the menu. THe guy I got it from had the leads just I never got one - yet]

It lists Omega A from 87 - only engine management, later  years more options show.
The early Omegas have the same connector as later ones - the OBD/EOBD type, not the earlier ALDL type.  The real Tech2 can read most systems on earlier ones, but not early 2.0l ECUs or IR type alarm.  Just wondered if yours could?

Most of the generic stuff, esp the cheaper stuff, can only do engine....

I would probably get the one iggy has got.

But if that wasn't an option, would I get the £30 ebay special  :-/  Possibly not, as my car can be paperclipped.  Unless I fancied a project to rewrite the software...

I bought my Tech2 predominately to be able to assist other members of the forum that helped me out (VxON at the time, now here).  I know what charges Vx charge, and think its unfair.  I would like to do all Tech2 work for nothing, but alas I have to recoup some of the costs (it will never, ever pay for itself), so I set what I think are very reasonable prices.

TB I got that!  I think your prices are great, by the way..  I'll probably get the gearbox upgrade if we meet sometime this year... Hoping to catch a cam belt party or other Sooooon :y

I quite fancy one of these e-bay jobbies, if they'll work on Vista, I've contacted the vendor to see if it will. I will post the reply on here..... :y

Also true of the paperclip, hence the comparison.  Anything other than the engine can wait IMO  ;)

Most Vista capable laptops lack serial ports.  And with Vista being slower than XP (on same hardware, and fresh build), its always going to be a struggle...

Hey, if you want that info then fine.  However, it loses its novelty after a while and you can't do anything with it.  It runs or it doesn't run.  If it doesn't run 9 times out of 10 the paperclip will tell you.  Even MAF and lambda issues show up with a paperclip.

If it was a modified turbo engine, or tunable ECU, then it would be different.

I have no problem with anyone who finds the paperclip check ok.
As for running 9 times out of 10 its never failed to run even with the
USB to Serial [ UK made] I've had it 3 months and got one software upgrade. Personally reset one airbag. Don't get this mixed up with the £30.00 +/- on ebay.

Back to the original question it better than the Ebay version: I think ??????

BUT COSTS MORE

It certainly seems better and must be more robust that the £30 ones.  I would certainly like to see it in action one day :)

Guys,
Contacted the vendor on E-Bay, with regards to the item in post 1 of this thread..  Asked them about Vista compatibility, not tried it yet so don't know....
