If no signs of oil in water, no. Its an extra £90 quid.  Can be 'easily' changed later if reqd (ie without taking heads off)

Not sure - can damage the cooler bolts....

Personally, I would leave if OK, unless someone advises otherwise...

My feeling too... I'm just thinking back to what you said, that the cooler could be causing the pressurising?

There are also several crusty deposits in the valley  :-/

With the heads off, you can remove the plate with the cooler still attached and hence you dont risk damaging the fine thread....

Hence re-sealing the plate is pretty easy.....do watch the oil cooler pipe connections to the block....spray with penetrating fluid for a day or so before attempting removal..

Presume to seal the plate, I still need to remove (disconnect)  the oil pipes completely... from cooler and block?

I don't think I have the special tool to get at them

Although, with the heads off, maybe access will be easier to reach down.....

Yes, easier to reach from above....a 19mm crows foot spanner is the weapon of choice...
