Screech!!! - Aux belt?
« on: 31 March 2007, 10:24:47 »

I changed my cambelt last weekend, along with water pump and aux belt.

The new aux belt was incredibly tight to get on - took two of us, one holding the tensioner to its limit and the other squeezing the belt over the water pump roller.  But maybe this is normal for a new belt.

Since then I have noticed a screech (difficult to describe really) when I start from cold and on pick up, but just for a couple of minutes from cold.   When warm (ish) it's as normal.

Any thoughts?   First priority is to reassure myself everything is ok with the cambelt - but I assume so as it runs fine other than as described above.   Secondly I'm concerned the belt is too tight (no idea how - or are there slightly different length belts?) and consequently stressing the bearings on waterpump, alternator, aircon etc.

or is this something that will sort itself out in time..?

Cheers,

Ian

I would say that is your Aux belt tensioner making that noise :-/ ( too much tension from the belt ) Boo Hoo had exactly the same problem :(

DO NOT use that belt

I be it came from autovaux.....

It shags the tensioner in no time at all

At minimum, you need a new tensioner pully and proper aux belt....

you may also need a new tensioner... you might be lucky..

Blimey, just popped back to see a mass of replies!

'dangle berries' it was from Autovaux - I'm going of those chaps rapidly.

Unfortunately I threw the packaging away, but it was a name I recognised (not gates).  Hit me with a few and I'll recognise it.

So should I put the old one back on? (on checking the service history prior to me, it was only changed 30k or so ago.)

Cheers

OK I've taken off the new belt.  Couldn't detect any problems with any of the pulleys or bearings.

Was hoping the new belt would have the manufacturers name on it but no joy, other than made in Germany.  Cardboard wrapper was blue - I'd know the name if I saw it.  Not GM and not Gates.

I will reassemble with the old belt shortly - 50% chance its going the same way as before.

Any advice before I do so?

Cheers

Ian

Ok all back together.  Started up and no squeal.  Hopefuly the belt wasn't on there long enough to do damage to pulleys/bearings.

Will see how I get on with getting a refund from Autovaux on Monday.

I had the same problem with my aux belt from Autovaux but I ran it for half an hour or so and it's stretched so it's not a problem any more. It did say it was 900mm (I think - whatever it was the correct length if 900 isn't it).
