There's progressive and then there's junk!
« on: 05 May 2007, 17:38:06 »

Just did my front rotors and pads.  When I bought the car thought they must be OK b/c they didn't shake.  Well, they were far gone depite no shake.  Everyone said how miggy brakes are supposed to be progressive so I was a bit confused at first, and then just got used to it.  They worked fine if you shoved the pedal hard, but essentially nothing before then.

New pads aren't even bedded in yet and the difference is noticeable.  Still the same when pushing the pedal hard, but at least some bite beforehand.  Hopefully will be even better when bedded in.  They are still 'soft' and 'progressive' but no longer complete junk.  Therefore, if you think that your brakes are worse than they really should be, take a close look at the front pads and rotors.  Mine were in a terrible state.  (The back does far less of the work, should be inspected but you likely won't feel if they are working well or not.)

Other tidbits;  Caught the sensors just before they went so saved a couple bob there.  Had to HAMMER the rotors off with a metal bar.  Likely that motorway shake was the rotors out of balance due to so much having rusted away (LHR run tonight so will see for sure).  3 cheers for TC card!

First miggy repair that wasn't a nightmare!  :y

OSF tire is rubbing the new Bilstein.  All tires need replacing soon.   :'(

Ill be intrested to find out if your motorway shake/vibration vanishes, as i have the samething,

When you say Rotors do you mean Brake Discs ?

I have some new disc i need to put on so hopefully that will help with the shakes :)

I had front wheel vibration issues, up until I changed the discs and pads, now silky smooth braking :).
Best to go for GM replacements not that expensive especially on T.C some non GM discs have been known to warp very quickl so are false economy

I had a shake through the steering wheel at motorway speed which turned out to be the rear wheels needing balancing. :y

:-? How long have you lived on this side of the Atlantic to know about a 'bob'? They've not been used in over 35 years!!! ;)

Yeah, I had all 4 balanced a while ago and that helped a lot.

Motorway shake doesn't happen as much but still happens.  Wheel bearings felt tight so must just be hard/lumpy tires.  Not too bad now, but tires are shot anyway.

Yes, we already had a thread about 'emergency brake' which is actually hand brake... perhaps we need a US-UK terminology thread in the Info section? :o

Theo, this sounds dangerous, tyre should not be rubbing on the strut......did you reset the front camber when replacing the front struts? , has it got far too much negative camber or is there a lump or bulge on the tyre sidewall?

It's only rubbing lightly, but yeah I need to get the alignment redone this week.  It is in spec at about -1.4 degrees, but that was slammed all the way in on that side.  I suspect that if anything new tires will be worse.  I'm going to have to repaint the strut or they might think it is still rubbing and fail it on the MOT.

When I put it together I slammed them both all the way in, negative.  Went for full geometry the next day.  That one didn't need to be changed b/c already within spec.  Hadn't driven far enough at the time for it to be obvious that it was rubbing.
