Gearbox Limp - Update 2!
« on: 06 May 2007, 19:52:05 »

Yesterday, Mark kindly spend a long time looking at my problem with the gearbox going into limp mode.

Although for reasons beyond our control (including darkness!) we were not able to get the problem resolved, we now know a lot, lot more.

Before anyone suggests selector switch, it's been renewed. As had the ECU, for a correct replacement.

The fault codes - 62 (power input relay volatage low) is present, and there were some historic ones regarding the solenoids

Firstly, on a positive note, Mark soldered my suspect connections, so they are now ruled out.

On the downer, when dropping the gearbox sump, Mark found a broken up Thrust washer in there :(

So, the gearbox mechanically is not in the best condition.

Mark removed and inspected the front solenoids, which appeared alright.

HOWEVER, we still are of the belief that there is an additional, electrical issue. The reason for this, is that when you turn on the ignition (without even starting the engine).. the box will go straight into limp mode. At this point it's only able to test the electrical circuit, hence logic says that it's finding an electrical fault, rather than a box fault?

Although, to contradict the above, when the car has not been driven for several hours, and you fire it up - it's NOT in limp mode, until you drop it into gear and sometimes drove off.. and it goes into limp within a few yards.

Mark's very extensive electrical testing did not reveal any shorts, or bad connections that we could tell.

So at the moment, not 100% sure how to proceed.

As Mark knows, I have access to another gearbox which is known to function properly

We are thinking the next step, is to actually fit this gearbox to the Elite, in order to eliminate it from the troubleshooting. Sounds drastic, but

A) It will eliminate it from being the culprit
B) It needs a new box anyway, based on the thrust washer found in the sump
C) It won't cost any more than my time (EG the box is free...)

Glad you're getting there James.  I'd do the swap if it was free.

I am wondering if the box remembers something is wrong for a while.

It does seem that 3.0l AR35 boxes seem to break these thrust washers...

Surely the only electrical component in the box is the soleniods, they can't remember faults can they?

No, but the ECU can.  IIRC, when we Tech2'd it, it had the original ECU on it?

Yup it did...

Although, now it still has to the best of my knowledge

Mark and I are thinking now that the box MUST be changed, on the basis that the thrust washer was found in the original one.. and on the basis that we couldn't find any other faults in the electrical system..

I agree with that next course of action.  Remember, fault codes are only what the ECU thinks is wrong, and the fact you have a broken mechanical item could easily confuse the ECU
