HELP!!! I need advice?
« on: 26 May 2007, 21:16:54 »

Hi all, Please could you let me know what you think about my situation?

2 months ago I bought a Vauxhall Omega Elite 1999(T) 3ltr V6 Saloon with 69,000 on the clock.

I have had lots of problems with it i,e steering went funny, air con didn't work & there is an automatic gearbox fault.

I have returned it to the dealer on many occasions & all problems have been sorted apart from the gearbox. They have renewed the oil, solinoid & changed the ECU & the problem is still there.

The dealer said that if the problem is still there he would proberbly have to change the gearbox & it wouldn't be worth his while.

He said he would give me a full refund OR a streight swap for a Vauxhall Omega Elite 1999(V) 3ltr V6 Estate with 110,000 on the clock.

I paid 3,270 for my car & the estate is on the lot for 4,499, It is only 6 months younger than mine & has the newer style interior But there is always the higher millage to think about?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me what you would do???????????????/ :'(

Potentially I would opt for the swap, subject to checking what the service history is on the elite e.g., cambelt etc..  :y

Hi Darren and welcome to the forum :y

I would have the refund and look for another car. I bought mine which is a 99 Elite estate, OK its got 120,000 miles on the clock but if well looked after, will do at least the same again and it cost me £1200.

I agree, but make sure of the service history.

Cam belt and tensioners will need doing in another 10K.

Make sure the history is there, they should have been done at 40K and 80K.

If, after checking the service history, you decide to swap, make sure he gives you a new 12 month warranty. At least that way you've got some peace of mind. Personally Darren, I think you can do a lot more with £3270 than a 99 T.

'...newer style interior..' - I am not aware that the interior has changed between T99 and V99, unless the V99 is already a facelift (unlikely)?

When you say 'new style interior' so you mean the V99 has the digital climate control and wood effect trim? is so than the V99 would have higher spec then our current T99. This, together with the fact that it is an Estate, will account for the higher price.

More specifically, the base trim levels i.e. GLS, CD, MV6 and Reflection did not have digital climate control as standard. The higher-sec trim level i.e. CDX and Elite, did...

If so, then the higher-spec car will also have other goodies, all of which add to the price....

At any rate it does seem that you have been treated fairly by the dealer, he did not shy away from his responsibility and do try to fix the faults that where reasonably fixable, and the swap he is offering is more than reasonable in my opinion.

Hi markjay,

when I say new style interior i mean (this is going to be hard for me to put into words) on my omega I do have the digital climate control there are four round discs with push buttons to adjust it these are black and patrude from the facia. the estate is grey and more flat/flush with smaller buttons steighter edges similler to the BMW.

I totally agree with you about the dealer I think he has gone above & beyond his call of duty, he has been very forthcomming & kept me in the picture all the way I estimate he has spent at least 1500 pound on parts & labour alone. And worse case scenario he is going to give me a full refund so I have lost nothing!

I suppose my main concern about the estate is the millage?

Facelifts came in on a 2000 V plate.

Personally I would disagree entirely with most of these posts and would willingly accept the offer of a full refund!

You paid how much??  :o

Ok, for 3k I would be perfectly confident of finding a newer elite, doing the cambelt change, giviing it a new exhaust and numerous other bits and still having change!

Mileage on these cars is not an issue at all, IF they are looked after!
I just sold a 98 R plated  3.0 elite with 151k on the clock and it drove beautifully.
I have a 3.0 MV6 that has 145k and goes rather well!  ;)

The V6 lump is solid and will do huge mileages if you service it properly.
Once you get to 100k though you will wear out certain items, mainly suspension related. All are easy enough to change though and not particularly expensive.

At the money you are spending, get the newer (facelift) model. They are a better car (even though I prefer the shape of the older ones).

MJ: Digital climate was standard on MV6, CDX and elite from 1996 onwards.

I agree with LB;

for £3,300 money, you're into facelift territory - don't be put off with the mileage.

I managed to find a 52 plate 3.2 elite with 88k genuine miles - only £1k more - and can't drive it without a huge smile on my face  :)

Darren,
Don't worry about mileage if it has service history. I only normally buy cars over 100,000 so that the previous owners have had all the expense. If the service history is good and it drives well without any funny noises then you should be alright. My advise is to shop around. I test drove 6 cars recently before settling with a 1997 MV6 estate with 107,000 miles. It was the best drive by miles. So use your gut feeling and don't necessarily take the first thing you see.

Read LB's buying guide, if the cambelts etc have been done recently, then it's always worth taking this into consideration when setting a fair price in your mind. It's no good thinking you've got a good deal when you then have to pay out ££££'s on bringing the maintenance up to scratch.
