Coolant Fumes
« on: 01 June 2007, 14:01:04 »

have noticed with my 2.2 that when sitting in traffic and coolant Temp' rising etc. that if the wind is blowing in the right direction (driver's window down) I can sometimes smell coolant fumes to some degree, I don't appear to have any leaks anywhere at the moment as I've checked everywhere, so could it be that the coolant cap is just releasing some pressure when hot , hence the fumes? used to get a similar thing on my old Carlton and that had no leaks either.
Cheers Pete

Do you have the air con on when you get this smell??

The reason i ask when the air con is on you get condensation on the hoses and it drips off, i thought i had a leak but when i turned off the air con it stopped :y

All breatthers clear mate including throttle body removed and cleaned etc. generally can't smellanything when running at normal Temp' but at high temp' e.g stuck in traffic and window down is when I get the whiff of it, quite honestly ,i'm not too worried about it as there are no leaks anywhere at the moment including HBV ( checked thoroughly again today)and I seem to remember my old Carlton smelling the same in traffic and the wife's old Astra, must be a vauxhall thing ,I'm beginning to think it could be the coolant tank itself giving off this smell when hot as it seems to be at it's strongest there.

....but do you actually loose coolant? If the coolant level isn't dropping over time, I wouldn't worry about it...

As said, if you're not loosing coolant, I wouldn't loose sleep.

One thing springs to mind if you can smell coolant in the cabin, is a small leak on the heater matrix.

If you can only smell it with windows Open, I'd say a leak such as HBV etc... but if that were the case I'd expect you to be loosing noticable amounts of coolant..

Not loosing any coolant as yet mate and all seems dry around HBV if I'm looking at the right thing (black plastic object with what looks like a couple of water pipes and thin vacuum hose connected to it), can anyone confirm with photo perhaps of the HBV on a 2.2 Omega.
