Overheating!!! 2.0
« on: 04 June 2007, 09:28:03 »

Hi there folks,
I recently flushed and changed the coolant with a nice 50/50 pink mix, as how to, in my 2.0 4pot, however when in slow moving traffic or stand still the temp creeps up until fan comes on . this might be normal, but I an sure it never use to come on as often, when I changed the coolant I flushed it out loads of times and let the engine run with the filler tank cap off with the heaters running flat out. Have I got a problem!
Thanks
Lyn

What temp is it hitting ?

Mine is running alittle hotter in this weather between 90 - 92 in slow traffic and between 82 - 85 on motorways.

Mine is running at 92 on a run and creeps up until the fan kicks in in trafic, only since I flushed the coolant.

Lyn, 92.5 is nornal running temp.

It should creep up to about 95 when idle, and the fans should bring it down.

If this is how it's behaving, then it's fine.

Hi there James

Yes it seems ok on a run about 92/95 But it dose creep up to about a 100 when stationary about 5 mins before the fan kicks in.

That's definately too warm...

You say this has only happened since you did a flush?

Did you use VX antifreeze with a 50/50 mix?

Pop the stat off on the passenger side of the engine at the front - 2 x torx bolts. (easy on the 2.0) and make sure it's not sticking shut. Believe you can still test this in a saucepan, and bring it to the boil.

From memory, you did a cambelt change not long ago. Did you do the water pump at the same time?

Tsk... ;) ;D

Personally speaking, I have halfords A/F in my 2.0, and that doesn't overheat, so it shouldn't be a reason why yours does either.

Try the stat test, very quick to do, and a bit of fun :)

Check the fan switches are working as expected. v6 ones switch in 2 stages, resulting in slow and fast speed fans. Presumably 2.0l is the same...

There are three fans on the 2.0, one behind rad and two in front of condensor, air con automatically switches on one of them (I think), does it run cooler if air con is on?

If the thermostat is OK, you may need a new rad switch, I had this happen on the Sunbeam, overheating big time, but mine totally conked - bridged it to cool the engine back down. If it decides to operate a few degrees higher....

I suppose the rad has been felt for cool spots?

Pretty sure two stage too - they used to go mad when parking up after a thrash or towing.

hi All
just got back from work and the car temp was 92ish but did not have to stop until I got home.   after reading on here I had a look for the fans, only found one behind the rad (see picif it works) If the thermostat was not opening wouldent it overheat on the open road? and the water in the header tank stay cold? .
I am sure that my fan only comes on when realy hot not in two stages, as mentioned, I shall have a look in haynes to see if this is correct  When I turn the air con on the one fan behind the rad comes on
