Seriously uneven tyre wear
« on: 22 June 2007, 09:04:32 »

I friend of mine, not on the forum, has got a problem with his 1997 2.5. The front tyres are worn through to the canvas on the inside, but there is still 4mm of tread on the outer edges.

I can't see the tracking being this far out as it drives ok (so he says).

Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like it could be running too much camber.

I'd get a proper geometry check done on the car. This should measure, at the minimum, camber, toe and castor on all 4 wheels. The service you get varies greatly from place to place so, depending on where you are located, try and use somewhere that comes recommended on here.

I had exactly the same problem and was advised by the local tyre fitter to get the geometry checked. I got this done and the steering pulled badly to the left. Took it back for another look and the bushes (Which ones I can't remember) needed replacing. Had all the work done and it now seems fine.

Hope  this helps in some way. :)

Very good point. There's no point in spending a lot on a geometry setup if there is a problem. Check the whole front suspension for play. Wishbone bushes are a common failure. While you're there check the steering idler and ARB drop links, although these probably won't contribute to an alignment issue.

I had something similar on mine earlier this year - the lhs tyre suddenly wore through to the canvas on its outer edge. I replaced the wishbones (the bushes were shot) and all 4 shocks then had 4 wheel alignment done - since then no problems (approx 15k miles)

Hmm, the fact that the car apparently has similar (albeit uneven) wear on both front tyres suggests a geometry problem to me.

The best person to advise in Wheels Inmotion, a member on here, who knows more about these things than practically anyone else in the land. He personally did the setup on my car and it was perfect. One of the problems with the Omega is that, over time, general suspension wear sets in, with the result that the suspension data found in the reference manuals may no longer be appropriate. Tony (Wheels Inmotion) knows all about this. That's why he is genuinely the best.

Here's the website:

That inner shoulder wear is cause by incorrect camber, as already suggested.
