Power steering problems
« on: 20 June 2007, 18:23:35 »

My power steering has started to play up. It started yesterday when my wife was using the car (theres a suprise) she said the steering goes heavy when she goes around corners so I thought it could be low fluid. I got home tonight and had a look and the fluid is at the correct level and the reason the steering goes heavy around corners is because the engine revs are low, if you rev it the steering gets lighter. So do I need a new power steering pump?

Hi Dave

The belt was a new genuine part when I did the cambelt a couple of months ago.

Just had a thought. I suppose it could be the aux belt tensioner though

Am I right in thinking the 2.5 and 3.0 pumps are the same.

Cheers Mark

How easy is the power steering pump to remove and do you have to bleed the pump?

Its pretty easy to get out, only three bolts.......and bleeding the system is easy as it simply involves turning the steering wheel with the engine running.

I nearly went sideways over a roundabout today. I had to go out in the Omega and the power steering was not working at all so I wrestled the old girl for about 7 miles in the pooring down rain until I came to a roundabout looked right nothing coming so I gave a good tug on the wheel and the bloody power steering decided to work :o a bit of unexpected sideways action and a skiddie in the trolleys. now the power steering has worked as it should for about 12 miles in total. whats going on :-/
