ecotec seal
« on: 21 June 2007, 17:22:17 »

I have just replaced my cam cover gaskets om my 3.0 elite, car started up fine after but there was a loud hissing from under the ecotec cover and the eml light is flashing,i found the seal broken (see here http://s130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/mahony_photos/?action=view&current=ecotecseal.jpg)
would this cause the eml light to flash ? , i have checked all the plugs and checked all pipes for kinks etc and all seem ok.

If you have cleaned the breather network (you have , haven't you - or all that painful job with the seals will soon be in vain..), you will get a surprising amount of hissing from the plenum.

I would replace the seal and see what happens.  If the light is still on, best to flash out the codes and see what it says.

Don't think so!  I'll bet you've left a plug / connector off somewhere.... I left the one off at the back of the inlet trumpets.... Aren't I the Numpty!!!!

I'm guessing that the knackered seal is causing a bloody big air leak into the plenum. The ecu sees this as a faulty maf sensor and pops on the eml. Replace the seal and see if the light goes out.

See I was listening when Mark explained about maf sensors a while ago  ;D

iv'e checked all the plugs and all seem connected,i did clean out the breathers but there was no undue crud,i think the seals just got hard, the eml light is flickering (almost in sync with the rev counter) i will try a new seal and see what happens, any one know the part number for the seal?

You've not trapped one of the cam shaft sensor wires have you?  the passenger side one is the most likely...  I would say!!

Anyone else?

If the EML is flashing, thats an immobiliser issue.

it only started after the cam gaskets where changed,is there a way of resetting the immobilser ?,the car starts fine.i  did not disconnect the battery when i did the work which i know i should have ,i seem to remember when the engine was running i accidently pushed the key fob button for close while the door was open and then i opened them via same fob with engine running, how about if i disconnect the battery for a while, cant do to much anyway untill i get a new seal.

That doesn't make sense - if the EML is flashing, the ecu hasn't had permission ot start from immobiliser  :-/

Could this be an electrical fault on the eml making it flicker rather than show a solid light?

I think I'd drop the battery off for an hour and reconnect it....  others may say useless, but, worth a try just  to clear it all down...  If still does it then.. gotta be a dodgy connection, surely!

it's a pre face lift, one of the last on a 2000 'V' plate, come to think of it i also shut the doors via the fob at one point and left the bonnet open so the bonnet switch would not have been activated,im just randomly guessing now as to what the fault might be but i will order a seal tomorrow (any one know the part number?) and take it from there, ,i will disconnect the battery if the seal change doe's not make a difference, maybe because i had a few sensors disconnected while i waited for a new cam cover and with the battery connected has set something off? any way i will report back if i manage to clear it.

i think i may have sorted it,just went and checked the car and low and behold the red light for the alarm/ immobiliser is not flashing (stereo one ok),after putting the key in the ignition and turning to position 1 i shut and opened the doors via the fob and then removed key and set alrm as normal and red light now flashing, cant start the car at the moment because the ecotec cover is still off, thanks 'the boy' for putting me on the right track with the immobiliser, will report back as soon as i fit the new seal, hopefully that will be that, quirky cars omegas!
