Rocker cover gaskets

Bought genuine gaskets from dealers as advised by forum. When I asked for the sealant thay advised me to fit them dry and not to use any. They did not stock any. When I questioned this they asked one of the masterfit mechanics who confirmed that they are fitted dry.

Has anybody done this with good results or would you definately advise using sealant as per the Haynes manual.

Ask them for a tube of 90 485 251

Definitely need the sealant, as per Vx own documentation.

Honda do exactly the same and their documentation says a blob of sealant on the 90 degree bends.

I think Vx parts get it wrong because the correct sealant isn't listed in the same section as the cam cover gaskets.

If you can't get it from Vx I have noticed loctite and various other makes sell the colour coded sealant. You need the black stuff - high temp, suitable for cam covers and O2/lambda sensor compatible.

Must admit had my cam covers done at main stealers and they fitted em dry said thats the new directive but mine are leaking again only 3 months since done get some sealant or you will have grief these lads on here know wat they talking about

Parts needed, as posted by Marks DTM

Rocker gaskets: 90511451, one set per bank (£25+ Vat retail)

O-rings: 90411826, 8 per bank (13p+ VAT retail)

Gasket, Inlet bridge to head: 90501652, 2 off  

Gasket, Inlet to Inlet bridge: 90501653, 3 off

Gasket, Inlet to Plenum O rings: 9118135, 6 off

Sealent, Black (not the Green stuff!): 90485251, 1 off

Let me put this to you...

The engines when designed were extensively tested and reviewed by very highly, skilled, qualified and experienced people.

They used the sealent during assembly which is an extra stage and costs extra money.

These same people also issued a guide in the form of TIS2000 which also tells you to use the sealent on replacement.


So who do you beleave, the people who lived and breathed the design, prooving and manufacture for many years.....or some scrote in Masterfit overalls.....

...and:

The Vx dealer that did my camcovers three years ago did use sealant in the right places (I know they did because I peeled it off when I re-did the covers a couple of months ago)

The Vx dealer (a different one) that sold me the gaskets for the camcovers job offered me the (correct) sealant before I asked for it...

... and both dealers have MasterFit on-site.


So your MasterFit guy is really an odd one out - ignore him.
