Not so, the oil cooler is only a common failure on poorly maintained cars....i.e. those with poor coolant changes and where the anti freeze mix is not maintained at 50:50 and this happens when people top the cooling system up with water and not a ready mixed anti freeze solution.

If you do go down the second hand route then as said, be aware that you need to ensure that the plate securing nuts remove cleanly as they have a habit of stripping the threads off the oil cooler on removal...

Mine went when the car was (luckilly) still under the original 3-years warranty... but then again it has been serviced by Vx annualy beforehand so this may explain it..  >:(

I've seen good engines steam a little bit from the oil filler when warmed up. Some water does get into the oil in the blowby gases and is removed as vapour by the breather system in due course. In addition, a little water may have been leaking into the oil through the failed cooler after shutdown when the cooling system is left pressurised so I'd say it's no cause for concern. Give it an oil change when the cooler is fixed for good measure.

Join Autobahnstormers is the quickest and easiest option if no-one in your area has one already. 20 quid for a year. Or see Ronnie's post above.
