TC light & loss of auto box
« on: 06 July 2007, 09:41:06 »

Driving to work this morning on dual carriageway and suddenly the TC light and car symbol with spanner came on. When I stopped and then pulled away again, autobox was pulling away in high gear (3rd or 4th) so had to manually use drives 1,2 and 3. Also noticed that sport mode would not work. Anyway, got to work, switched off engine and waited a couple of minutes, restarted engine and the warning lights were no longer on and autobox was back to normal.

Looks like my jinx with cars is still with me :'(  Any ideas what this problem was or is?

Welcome to limp mode!

Unfortunately you need a code reader, no paperclip on 3.2 - in fact, probably need a real tech2, as cheapo I don't think reads 2.6/3.2 or gearbox, both of which need checking, along with ABS unit.

On later cars, Engine, box, and ABS/TC all chat over CAN to each other, and can all ask others to go into limp.

Thanks for that Jaime. Looks like I'll have to get my garage to check it out (it's going in next week anyway) as I know they have a Tech2. Strange that it's all ok again at the moment :-?

No, a restart should take it out of limp (obviously, as long as the fault doesn't immediately become present again)

Had a diagnostics check at local garage yesterday and it came up with fault code P1700. They couldn't find any analysis of this code but said it was transmission related. Would you or anyone know exactly what this code means?

Did they read the gearbox and ABS unit?

from memory P1700 is CAN error, which from experience means either engine, box, or ABS not happy - need codes read from all of them to know which...

according to code list I have access to...P1700 is
"transmission control module (TCM) service request signal"
If that is the onlty code that came up then it doesnt give you  much to work on

Thats the point, you have to read the module that requested the engine limp, ie the box or the ABS

I thought that P1700 was a fault code from the gearbox ecu....does real tech2 enable futher interrogation??

P1700 is a code stored in Motronic, not from TCM.  The request may have come from TCM (or ABS), but you need to read those units to find out why it has told engine....

Thanks guys. They don't have a Tech2 at the garage I use (thought they did) so don't know what kind of diagnostics they use. They have another garage a few miles away that does have a Tech2 so might have to drop it in there to get ABS and gearbox read. BTW what's a CAN error Jaime? :-/

Ironically though, these lights have not come back on again sisnce it first happened and car and gearbox are functioning perfectly ok :-?

CAN is a protocol used for ecus to chat.

i would leave until next meet, unless it reoccurs?
