Error 34 - Cam Sensor.
« on: 19 July 2007, 11:55:44 »

Hi Chaps, Just a quick one...

I know i should scan the forums for FAQ's and the likes but i already know the fault on my 2.0 Omega.  It seems to flag up error 34 (after paperclip check) which is cam sensor as far as i am aware.  What i can't work out is what would cause the error to flag after a 15 miles and a few stop/starts?  The EML is not lit when i cold start her and does not show at the end of my 15 mile run to work.  It only shows if i stop and start her a few times, simular to a few short visits to asda/petrol station/home trips...

Does error 34 start as a heat related intermittent error at first?

Many thanks in advnace!

Marc

Cam sensor is code 0340, unless your 2.0l is an old one?

Well i got 10 flashes, then 3, then 4 and finally 10 again.  Then the sequence is repeated...

My motor is an X20XEV on a W plate.

The 10 flashes is a 0, so your are getting 0340 ;)

Cam sensor failures are common on 4 pots. I believe MDTM took a failed one apart and it had failed cap.

As you have the code up, just change it - one of those, if it flags up, it usually is the sensor (unlike some other codes).

Nice one!

I just so happens that i have a new one boxed up somewhere in my loft.  I bought one from Vx in error a while back while diagnosing a fault which turned out to be a human error, my error!

Well i'll give it a swap out later this week.

Cheers

A lot of injection systems only use the cam sensor at startup. Once the ECU is synchronised to the phase of the engine it relies only on the crank sensor. I'm not saying this is definately the case with the Omega but consider if the cam sensor was on its' way out and failing at high temperatures. It would only flag a warning on startup with a hot engine. If the engine was started from cold all would be well.

Kevin - Excellent, that sounds about right!  I didn't know it was only used when cold but it does make sense.
