help 3.0 elite
« on: 29 July 2007, 13:53:55 »

hi what a great site i had to join.    I am just about to purchace a 1996 3.0 elite saloon. and i would love to know if there are any things i should be looking at to make sure its a ok buy. the owner has told me that he has changed the cam belt himself? not a job i would like to do on my own. but dose anyone think this is a job that should be done on a diy bassis.   it also showing 125.000 miles which sounds right for car but i do know that he has broken omegas in the past and it wouldnt take him much to change the clocks. is there anything i could look at to see if that has been done.    cheers for anyone willing to help

Ask him to show you the receipt for the parts, they should be genuine Vx parts only.

It's not the belt that goes, it's the rollers that fail. It will need doing properly ASAP.

You could DIY, there's a Cambelt DVD available on here that gives you a step by step guide.

£609 is way over the top.

As regards to whether you should buy it or not, I'm afraid I could not comment without seeing the car 'In the flesh', sorry, but I will say that just by changing the cambelt will throw extra strain on the rollers, and could cause a disaster at any time, and I mean just by driving it home.

why would you pay £700 for a car and then pay £600 to put right what you know to be wrong with it?

hi there more peace of mind really. i would plan on keeping it for quite a while so if i had to pay through the nose to get it up to spek then so be it.   ive looked everywhere to find a fully serviced up car and  no luck at all. good point though...cheers

IF I were you, I'd walk away.

Anyone who changes the belt without spending the time to change the rollers and pulleys really can't be trusted. He should darn well know that merely changing the belt isn't good enough...What else has been done half heartedly and "botched up".

There are plenty of good examples of Omega's on ebay.....don't take the chance....Trust me..Been there, got burnt, spent a fortune...but after an extra £1200 OVER the buying price...mine is now A1...Well as much as a 9 year old Omega can be A1 ???
