2.5 or 3.0 !!      How can you tell

Is there a simple way to tell whether the engine sitting under the hood is a 2.5 or 3.0.....no matter what it sais on the back ?

Some late 3.0L had a long-node plenum (which was later standard on the 2.6 and 3.2), so if the plenum is long-nosed then it must be a 3.0L and not 2.5L.

Also, originally the 3.0L had a dual-pipe backbox as opposed to single pipe on the 2.5L, but of course on older vehicles which may no longer have the original backbox this is not conclusive.

But ultimately as said it's the log book...

Understood about the V5 BUT what if the engine was swapped over at some stage and it wasn't registered as such..

If you take the plenium chamber off you can see the inlet manifold,3.0ltr engines have 30 cast into the surface of the metal. sim the 25ltr has 25. HTH. :)

You might find there's a sticker on it with the type designation. X25XE or X30XE respectively.

Look at the engine flange next to the gearbox bell housing by the oil filter.....the engine number and type is stamped into the casting here.
