noise after oil change
« on: 04 August 2007, 19:00:28 »

Hi, I have just changed the oil on my 2.5 V6 reflection. After the oil change, there has been a tappety noise which I thought would go once the oil reached all parts. After a 5 mile gentle run, its still there. I have put in 5.8l oil, of the 15-40 variety. I used engine flush first and did all the right things, so what can it be? The engine didn't make this tappety noise before, or if it did, it was hardly noticeable.

any help would be appreciated!

engine flush may have dislodged some muck that was in the engine which in turn may have got under one of the hydraulic  lifters, did you use a good quality oil ?,you can buy a additive for cleaning /freeing hydraulic  lifters from halfrauds.

it was halfords 15-40 oil, but mineral, not synthetic. what is the name of this stuff i can use to free the hydraulic lifters? I will give it a go!

2,5v6 should run on 10w 40 semi-synthetic oil.......... change oil again to right stuff and add in lifter enhancer, then the tappets should settle down.

Sould be a minimum of semi synth....  .....worth changing for proper stuff, and doing very regular changes initially (like 250 miles, 500 miles, 1k, 3k etc).  If you are near me, I can get Vauxhall Semi Synth at a good price, as can many other members. Oil filters nice and cheap as well ;)

I agree for the most with the replies so far. Get a few cans of Vauxhalls own oil and some new filters, and do 200 mile changes for 1000 miles. As I'm doing with my Veccy at the moment.

I disagree with use of lifter additive though, I would use that as a last resort..hate anything mixing with perfectly good oil..

As an aside, my project Estate V6 had used 20/50 cavalier oil in it when I Got it, it made an AWFUL noise upon startup - but once changed for 10/40, never ever did it again.

Food for thought...

heres a link to the hydraulic lifter cleaner http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_203145_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_58757_crumb_33958-31345-58755_parentcategoryrn_58757
read the instructions it may be ok to add to your existing oil and then change oil for correct one (semi or full synthetic). good luck

the 15-40 was put in because it ssaid that was the oil for a 2.5 V6 in the oil book!!!!
I will try the lifter fluid, then put in a semi.
The guy I had bought it from had put in full synth about 2500 miles before i got it, but on a long run, 479 mile, the computer gave me the oil low warning!! so I thought that the fully synth was a bit too thin for her!
but im not  mechanic and am an omega newbie, so what do i know!!!!
thanks for the help guys, will  let you know how it goes inna bit!

A little tip to keep costs down - join autobahnstormers.org.uk for £20 per year, and you get a 'trade club' card. You use this card at your dealer (check www.tradeclub.co.uk) and can, for example get 4 x 5l Vauxhall semi synth for £30 inc VAT!
