Air mass meter
« on: 27 July 2007, 15:36:44 »

Just had miggy back from Vx as my emissions light has been flashing for the past few weeks, not all the time, I would say it been on 3 times in 2 weeks and resets when engine re-started.

Vx have given me the code p0400 when they did a tech 2, they say its incorrect readings found on the AIR MASS METER and it needs replacing.

Question:- Vx want £157.20 to do the job, would you think I could get one myself cheaper than this, and once fitted by me would I need a further tech 2 to reset, or is it a case of just putting a new one on.
The car is a 52 2.2 DTI GLS.

Thanks

So, all they have done is read the error code, no live readings, no actuator tests whilst monitoring MAF values......

It could be an EGR fault, air leak and so many other things.

Here is the exact wording on the invoice
Carried out diagnostics on tech 2 and detected trouble code stored on management system indicating critical system malfunction (p0400).
After further checks incorrect readings found and requires a new air mass meter.

If it does come to it that you need a MAF I bought one of these for my Astra TD. A 'real' one from vauxhall was £1?? something. I've had no problems so far (but it's only been a week yet ;) )

Miggy, you have the same fault that brought me to the forum nearly a year ago.

Emissions light was on/off and then eventually on all the time.  Same code read by Vx and to cure the problem a very kind member wrote this how to http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1162397695

I also replaced the fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter, spark plugs and used an injection cleaner in the fuel.  After cleaning all of the above it ran much better but the fault persisted.

I replaced the MAF from Ebay for £55 and it's now ok.  I would point out though that if I knew now what I did then I'd try and clean the MAF element with computer foam clean first - I kept the original part and will swap them over this week to see if it really was faulty and if so I'll send it to Mark's DTM 'cos he swears blind they never fail.

I think mine was an air leak that sorted itself out with all the rummaging around.  Give it a go, it's cheap enough to try and easy to do and very rewarding if you fix it yourself. :y

I have heard you can clean them as a last resort as it can knack them also if your not carful, two ways i have heard is cotton bud with white spirits or medical alcohol, other way is carb cleaner. dont hold me to this i just read it somewhere as a later resort before buying a new one

The car runs excellent even when the emissions light was flashing on and off, no probs at all.

Fitted the new MAF today, no light as yet.

Just to report back, since changing the above, the light has not come on again.

 :y :y :y

Vx wanted £157.00 to do the job, all it cost me was £25 for the item and 10 mins to fit.

This is the last report on this unless it goes again.

Been over a week now and many miles, since changing the light has not come back on.

Job done.
