Due to the running out of fuel, I would also get a new fuel filter and fit it.  Running problem could be a lack of fuel supply caused by a blocked filter.  This would cause a lack of fuel pressure which may trigger the EML.  Could also be a fouled plug causing poor sparking which may also trigger the EML.  This is just a theory.

Symptoms are like a crank sensor, but I have read in the past that when they die no amount of cranking will get it started again until the engine has cooled down.  Have you have starting issues in the past?  By this I mean has the engine taken a long time to start?

my mv6 just had a cranksensor fail. i would cut out a lot and then not restart. in the mornings i'd have to crank it for about 4minutes to start it.

if i unplug the air flow meter then it will start and idle normaly.if i plug it back in while its running  it will idle for 5 seconds then die.

possible its failed, but rare.  Check for airleaks first, esp if it backfired when you ran out of fuel

thanks for all your help people. it was the mass air flow meter that was triggering the EML and stopping the car from idleing. the fuel filter was also bloked. now i have replaced both and the car again runs fine. thanks again. stumpy451  :y  :y  :y
