It's all gone belly up!
« on: 17 August 2007, 11:16:37 »

Right, I bought an MV6 with HGF, fixed that put everything back together - didnt start after muchas rather about I learned the fuel pump wasnt priming.

I cpoke to the guy I bought it off who said he too had that problem but after a sparky looked at it they bought a new crank sensor and they had to reprogram the chip in key.
He went on to say that there is a 30 amp fuse in the engine bay (in the triangular bo at the smallest part which was blown and they changed after the new sensor was fitted).

I drove the car before doing the HG and it did have a missfire (I assume due to water in the bore).

still reading?  ;)

I had a play with the fuel pump relay and now it works.....? (opened and manually pushed arm across)
The thing is now, when I try to start it, it pops and farts but wants to run until I open the throttle - then it sounds like theres nothing there?

EML goes out while cranking.
Inlet stripped down and rebuilt (twice to be sure everything is plugged in)
NEW: dispack, plugs, leads, crank sensor and timing belt kit (timed up using locking kit)

I'm absolutely stumped on what to look at next.

Any ideas appreciated  :y

Thanks, I'll check the timing again though I must of checked 5 times when I timed it up the first time round.

It seems to have a weak spark...

When cranking, above a certain amount of throttle disables fuelling (flood clear mode) so maybe this is why it tries to fire until you give it throttle.

It might be worth putting a timing light on one of the plugs and making sure you're getting a strong, regular spark. If that's OK double check you've got the plug leads to the right cylinders.

Have you got a smell of fuel on the plugs?

If you press the little schrader fuel pressure test point at the rear of the fuel rail do you get a good squirt of fuel? (Cover it with a rag so you don't get doused)

It might be worth getting a can of Bradex easy start. Spray a load of this into the Multiram then crank. If it fires on this it points to a lack of fuel.

Get some Noid lights and make sure the injectors are getting a pulsed signal when cranking.

If the 30A fuse has blown before it does point to something going wrong in the engine management system. I'd have a careful look over the engine loom and in the cable trays for any sign of damaged or melted wiring. Maybe something has shorted out in there.

I did use a timing kit..... then I sent it back (autovaux) as it was timed up.

The mistake I made was when I put the cam pully on I put it on as a 4 - instead of 3.
Really stupid I know but I did have 3 kids running riot a yapping staffy and a nagging missus all at once.
Managed to not upset the timing when flipping the cam round - RESULT!

Thanks for everyones help  :y

If it was 180 out it should be OK. It would explain why it didn't run desperately well, though :-[

Not yet, I'm having a prob bolting the L/H downpipe back to the manifold so sounds like a tank and havent been able to open it up yet.

Busy day tomorrow too then - various bulbs in dash etc  :y
